Subtitle should read: In defense of the nerd : P
It wasn't that long ago that I would've stayed very clear from the words "geek", "nerd", "freak", etc. After all I was bullied mercilessly throughout elementary school and high school. And college wasn't exactly a cake walk either...
Anyway I'm embracing it now and realize it doesn't have to be as negative as everyone else sees it. After all North American society glorifies ignorance and stupidity going while fearing and ridiculing anyone who shows even the slightest sign on intelligence. God forbid someone should think critically!! So being on the "dork" side may be alright even if the majority don't see it that way.
I'm glad to see films like "Watchmen" and "Dark Knight" getting good reviews and even awards. These films deserve the recognition just for being good quality films. That fact that they originated from "comic books" really shouldn't mean anything. Ideas for movies can and should come from anywhere.. novels, non fiction, graphic novels, newspapers, etc. Whatever makes a GOOD story that should be the only thing that matters and people take into consideration. It's just ridiculous that some people still look down on graphic novels because they're "comic books" meant for kids. A book is a book is a book. What should matter most is the CONTENT and MESSAGE. It shouldn't matter what format that message comes in. It's like looking down at a band because they release only CDs and no vinyl. It's silly and close minded.
I went to the special screening of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" where director Edgar Wright was present and answered questions from the audience. A girl started he question by saying "There are a lot of fanboys and geeks making movies now...why is that?" Wright replied "There have always been geeky film directors! Like Coopla, Speilberg just look at Martin Scorese...he's a big geek!"
He's right that geeks have always dominated the film industry. I mean to work in it and be successful you need to be intelligent, passionate, creative, just obsessed with getting that movie made. All very geeky things. You need to have something to say and be open to getting inspiration from all kinds of sources. It would be nice if more people realized that.
Oh yeah and Edgar Wright is in Toronto now filming an adaptation of the GRAPHIC NOVEL "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" "gasp" another comic book movie! Personally I'm fine with that and I hope more keep coming along as long as they're good movies.
