"We Are The New Vintage"
I recently got hired to perform burlesque at an upcoming revue (first live show!). As comfortable as I normally am in my own skin, since my audition I went through an event (won't give details-- saving your lunches!) that left the outside of my stomach rather.. cut up. Is it absolutely faux pas to leave an underbust corset on throughout your entire routine? Or some other kind of stomach hiding garment? I hope this isn't an entirely strange question, but I've heard mixed reviews from the other dancers and would really like to get this settled.

IDK how bad they are, but DermaBland is a FAB product. It covers tattoos, even.
I think underbust corsets are HOT, but not everyone does...So, maybe talk to the person you'll be paid by?
Skylar: as a fan let me stick in my .02
I have no problem with an underbust staying on, especially if you make it part of the act itself.
stick with a skin tone and use props to give the illusion, or pick a garment you can wear something over and take that off
for me burlesque is about the tease the illusion and the promise, rather than the reality of flesh ;)
True true! There is a tease appeal to it! When Burlesque first came in fashion it was never (or rarely) full nude...Think Feather Fans and Can Cans...Side Boobs and Half Ass... =-D
Ok. As a performer here in New York I've seen a pro perform here with a very scarred tummy and she's one of the best performer's I've seen. She's amazing and really hot, but she owns her scars. If you aren't comfortable with them then it will read in your performance. That's what is important. YOUR comfort level. Burlesque is about embracing the female form... all the female forms, and as a performer it's about you embracing YOUR form. I've seen incredible acts where the underbust corset stayed on, from some of the top performers in the country, so it's NOT faux pas AT ALL. It was sexy and incredible. I've seen a woman come out nude and not even move- she got a standing ovation... figure that out!
It's about YOU and what works for YOU. Your audience is there to have a good time, give them a good time and do it on YOUR terms. As far as your scars are concerned, don't be afraid to work around them or with them but try it both ways and do your own thing. Try the routines in front of a few friends who are performers and get feedback... half the time the audience only notices what you show them. Trust me.
Inspiring words from Dixie Rising there! :) x
Thanks for the responses! And sorry for the delay! The employer said they were okay with the idea of my using an underbust corset. I will look into that product however! Love love love you guys xoxo
Good luck and have fun!! :-) xx
Good to go! It's not a faux pas to leave an underbust corset/cincher on for a BurlyQ act. Dixie Rising said it lovely. It's about you feeling comfortable on stage and shining as you shimmy!
