Hello All,

I am going to be auditioning for a retro themed fashion show at my university in a few weeks and wanted to know if any of you lovely ladies ever did run way modeling? Any tips or video tutorials you'd be willing to share? I have never done any type of modeling before so anything would be useful.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Alright, I'm going to give an odd piece of info, but I used to design clothes for a living... One thing to remember, if you are on a runway, you're there to show the clothing off. Being cast as a model, of course designers and stylists look for an extreme signature look, but when you're out there, your job is to sell what you wear. Ask for direction of what features of the clothing need to be featured in your walk, posture, gestures and hand placement.

For example, If there are pockets, you might consider showing them by using the pockets by putting your hands in them, and at the discretion of whomever you are modeling for, sometimes you may need to remove a blazer or jacket during the show. Whatever you do, please do not use your hands to cover any detail of the clothing.  Also, any big detail, be it waistband or collar, make sure to not block these details from view by a photographer. If you are asked to carry an accessory (handbag, umbrella, etc) please be mindful not to block major areas of the clothing.

I'm passing this info along because this was my biggest b**** in art direction for catalogs, that half my shots, someone had a handbag covering the front of an outfit, or the jacket needed to be shown in addition to the outfit and the model had 'forgotten' to remove it during the walk.

Also, don't take anything personally. Especially if you have an idea how to style the clothes as a model, and you get your idea shot down. It's not anything personal, it's just someone else's "baby" and a lot of times they just want their way. I've had designers and stylists instruct the models to not even think of touching their clothes once they have things adjusted the way they want them. People get super stressed out on catalog walks or fashion shows. We're all the worst version of ourselves sometimes.

(you wonder why I decided to go work on tv for a living...)

Simple; OWN it!  You'll be great doll. :)  Have fun.

Cynthia Mae- I like remembering to keep the interest of the fashion designers in mind during the show. As a beginner, I am really excited and all to be out there, but I also would want to keep in mind that the show is about the designer, not me. Great professional tips that are much apperciated.

Crissy Lou- Own it! Simple and to the point. Thanks =)!

Just wanted to give an update. SO, unfortunately at the last minute they changed the requirements of the show to being 5"5 or taller, and with my petite 5"1 height I couldn't quite make the cut. I know when one opportunity dies it's because another is about to blossom, so I'm trying not to be too disappointed. I really thank you all for encouraging me though, it helps as a girl just starting out from scratch at this profession. And I'm sure this thread will be useful to others in the future.

when and where is this? PROMOTE!!

Yo that SUCKS, had you already made the cut? WTF made them re-write rules?

Yeah super sucks. I hadn't been picked yet, I was planning to audition and the first facebook event they made said no height requirements. I spoke to someone that was a part of the fashion club on my campus holding the auditions and she said as well no height requirements. THEN on Friday they make another facebook event and say height requirements. Its for my school so I guess you have to expect it to be a bit of unprofessional, but still!

It is in Sacramento for Sacramento State University, I'll provide the facebook event for the auditions that are this week and in march below...
