Hi Ladies!

So I recently dyed my hair red, and I know that red tends to fade pretty quick, but I was wondering if any of you have any tips on how to make it last just a little bit longer?
And it seems that the tips have faded much quicker than the top - would it be wise next time around to start at the tips so it sets longer?

I used Garnier, if that makes any difference in anyone's response, or if you would suggest another brand.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

xoxo Nicole

Did you use a color sealant after dying it? I've heard many good things about Halo, if you'd like to give it a shot.

I have red hair I use Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner, Redken Rich Recovery (every 4 shampoos) and Occasionally brighten up with CHI Organics Tone and Shine Conditioner. I also use Redken's Color Extend Shine Enrich which contains UV protection to help shield from those fading Sun rays

Ive had red hair for a while now with no fading

BTW- do you know what brand of color your Stylist uses on you?

Well I use henna to colour my hair red, mixed with red zinger tea for extra intensity. But I did used to work for a salon supplier so I'm farmilliar with standard dyes and it wont make any difference where you start it will always fade from the top first because the ends are more porous. Though give a clarifying/build-up remover treatment a try before you colour (like the day before and dont condition) It might help a bit.
Use a colour fade shampoo and conditioner, but no more than twice a week max, use styling products with sunscreen and cold rinse after dying and washing, as cold as you can stand it. It closes the cuticle and seals in the colour.
Red is worth the extra bother I never wanted to be anything else since the first time I saw Rita Hayworth when I was a kid! love those red hot read-heads xxx
please! you need to stop using Boxed Hair Color from the grocery store!!!!! it is not good for your hair. "metallic dyes" can be unpredictable, they dry your hair out and cause it to be brittle and it effects the Porosity (which deals with the way your hair holds color).

ok. now that I've gotten that out.. lol

I agree with Sandra M, Redken products are awesome, and do help extend the life of your color significantly. also using a UV protectant will help protect your hair from the rays of the Sun which can fade and damage it...

stay away from getting your hair wet in Swimming pools chlorine can fade hair color, and don't shampoo your hair everyday!

also, Tessa is totally on spot! try using a color Sealer after coloring your hair. what that does is closes down the cuticle of your hair which helps prevent color from seeping out.

hope I helped..
hahaha! this was a submission by me (Nikki) not Xavier... he left his profile signed in on my computer!!

Thank you all so much!! This next time around I will be sure to use the color sealant and grab a bottle of the Redken shampoo and conditioner
I actually have gotten really bad (and a little lazy). I just get a box color and do it myself. I have a hair person here but I'm moving in a few weeks, so I hated to get started with something and then not be able to find someone once I move (and not have to pay a fortune).
I know the box colors are not the best but they fit my budget lol and they get job done!

Once I get settled I will have to find someone - do you have any suggestions on the brand I should have a stylist use??

if there is a Sally Beauty Supply in your area they offer a lovely selection on color that is much less damaging than box color. and it's affordable

Oh perfect! I'll have to go that route when I touch up in the next couple of weeks.
Do you have any suggestions of a specific brand Miss Nikki Sin? I am not so good at this - I just get bored and go with how I feel... The last color I used was Light Intense Auburn by Garnier (not too red, but it looks great).

I'm really likeing the Clairol Proffessional. it's a Creme Haircolor that has Soy in it so it helps nourish the hair. another good one is Wella. you'll just have to ask your associate for some advice. remember that Color doesn't lift color, and try really hard not to over lap too many products.

as far as after care goes, try to stay away from shampoos that have sulfate in them, it will strip your hair and cause your color to fade quickly.
I used to use home hair color, too, but it seriously doesn't look as good as a professional job! It's totally worth the money to go to a salon. My favorite products are Redken. They make shampoo & conditioner specifically for redheads:
redken color extend
All the Color Extend products have UVA and UVB filters to help resist fading.
These products will help resist fading, but the sad truth is red hair fades more quickly than any other color. Even naturally red hair. So you're basically just postponning the inevitable. But I don't mind the upkeep cuz redheads rock!
