Anyone else in my boat? Try everything? (videos on the internet, books, styling lessons, ets) and STILL can't get it? I guess I am just hair challenged. I have bought everything.....3 different kinds of rollers, bobby pins galore, combs, you name it. Even a vintage hair dryer. So it's not lack of supplies......

I see other girls with rad hairstyles and want SO badly to be a "good hair" person but I always end in frustration with bobby pins, cans of hair spray, and junk strewn all over my bathroom and I still don't have victory rolls, just a matted up mess of hair and breakage everywhere from backcombing.

I've tried doing it the pincurl way and that was an even bigger disaster.

Has anyone ever tried that book "Vintage Hairstyling"?

or has anyone been like me for a long time and FINALLY found that one thing that helped you finally "get it"?

There are lots of ways to make your hair have a vintage look without bobby pins. I often use hot rollers, and pull the sides back with combs, and do a tight curl in my bangs over to the side. Here's a pic from New Years.

I sometimes pull the sides back and then put my hair in 2 braids, or pull all the long hair over to one side. The combs can often times give it a vintage "rolled" look.
I'm partially in the same boat, I can curl my hair really nicely but no matter what product I use they just fall out, which is bizzarre because my hair is naturally curly (just a different type of curl).

I also can do some quiffy things and some rolls... though victory rolls seem to allude me, but that might be because my hair is too layered. I've tried following some youtube vids but not always very well.

What I can do, I can do well, but there are loads of other things I can't do and wish I could :(
I know how ya feel!!!! Everyone elae can get my hair do what they want. But if I try, it's a whole different story! So I get fed up grab a do rag and throw it up in that. My Grandma told me how to get my hair up so I can tie the rag on the top of my head. So nine times out of ten you see me like that.

Make-up is also not my thing!!!!

Hehe! I find myself in the do rag ALOT too. Thank god I am good at makeup, or I'd be screwed all around!
I've found that frustration makes it worse... and I believe in the power of positive thinking. So, when I find myself in a rut, especially with my hair, I just imagine it coming out great and make it happen. Yes, sometimes that means starting over... I know sounds too easy right? Practice, practice, practice. And trust me, I have every hot roller, small medium and large bobby pins, flat irons, I have it all... practice, practice, practice. I really believe you'll get it! Also, a lot of styles that look great on one gal, don't look great on me. So, instead of recreating, I take the essentials of the retro do and create it to compliment my face and hair type. Did I mention practice? Keep practicing, be patient and make it happen!

When one side doesn't look as good as the other, I stick a flower in it :D

Oh, I just thought of an essential! TEASE IT! Seems as though no matter the hair type or the retro style you're trying to accomplish, you must have and use your teasing brush.

xx

You can do it! You can!!!
Ok darlin', I take that all back. I just looked at your pictures and you have the perfect hair for styling! And your styles are adorable! YOU DO NOT SUCK AT HAIR! LOL!!

Whatever you're doing is working... ! Keep at it! Your hair looks fabulous!

:) I appreciate it, thanks! but, I still feel that my hair always pales in comparison to some of the styles I see not only on this sight, but at Viva and other events. Even when I think I've got it up into something decent, I go out and see other hairstyles and it reminds me of how much mine is pretty lame...haha

I always wonder when I see a really killer do, if that girl did it herself or had it professionally styled. I can't afford to see a stylust for every event or photo shoot, so I have got to figure out a way to improve, cause I really want some killer hair!
Here are some pics of my friend Tanya, who used combs instead of rolls to do her hair. These photos were featured in the first issue of garage magazine.

I LOVE the book Vintage Hairstying! Its written much the same way my cosmetology school book was- it assumes you know nothing about hairstyling and has tons of pictures and educates you about combs, brushes, styling products, curlers, and techniques.

When I started styling my hair vintage I was 15 and there were no good resources like there are now. Its a practice in dexterity, like fingerwaves, you have to do it over and over and over until you are frustrated (and in my case throwing my manniquin head on the floor and swearing like a sailor). And I still have days when it just doesn't look right or my curls look terrible!

Just stick with it, try it every day even if you're not planning on going anywhere. My biggest advice of all- day or 2 old curls tend to roll up better then freshly washed hair.
Don't give up lady, it takes time!!! Just keep at it and one day outta the blue you will figure out that it wasn't so hard!
I wish this worked for me, because I'd be able to get ready a lot faster if I didn't have to wash my hair every time I wanted a vintage style! My hair will not hold a curl unless it starts off with a squeaky clean wash and blow dry.
