Ok, so this is my first post here. I haven't been very active cause I'm very new to this whole style, and super busy, so I haven't had much time to take pictures and work on my look.

I wanted to hear from others about how to perfect pin up hair styles. I have attempted, for the first time, after watching about a dozen or more youtube videos, to imitate the pin up hair style, but feel I failed miserably.

I redid and sprayed my hair so many times I had to jump in the shower, wash all the hair spray and mousse out, and try it while it was still wet. I was having a real hard time getting my curls to look sleek and perfect like the pin up models.

I have very thick hair and it has a lot of natural wave and curl to it already. I also have my hair thinned since it is so thick, so I have a lot of loose fly aways, and every time I tried to spray and smooth it out I ended up with a bunch of stray matted down hair on my curls lol.

Did everyone have this much of a problem when they started, or am I doing it wrong? I have included pictures of my first attempt and would like to get any suggestions or feedback I can on how to get perfectly sleek looking curls.

I get the hair rolled up, but it seems like the curl just isn't tight enough, or isn't in the right position for anyone to tell what hair style I'm trying to  pull off.  The ends are varying lengths, so it makes it difficult to keep it all rolled up together. On the youtube videos the girls make it look sooooooo simple.

Here is a slide show of the pictures before and after my attempts at pin curls and to do victory rolls in my hair. http://www.kizoa.com/slideshow/d1933576k9280697o1/pin-up-hair
The pin curls turned out alright I think, but the rolls gave me a lot of problems.
These aren't the best pictures :P plus I was practicing my pin up face expressions, so don't laugh too hard lol :)
PS. I know the pins aren't suppose to show, and one should go one way, and the other from the opposite side of the roll going in the opposite direction, but my hair is thick and heavy, so I had to use extra pins, plus I couldn't figure out how to get it to slick down so I used pins to help with the poof. Maybe section off even less hair next time?
Thanks for listening :)

I'm not good at ratting, and no I didn't do too much ratting to it cause it seemed to make the strays worse. That was the one step I failed to follow lol... good eye. So I have to just stop being scared and rat the mess out of it?
You actually did a pretty good job of it.  You might try using some pomade on your hair before you start.  It should help to tame the fly aways a bit.  I have naturally curly hair so fly aways are always an issue for me.
Practice and patience! <3

Tame the fly-aways by using a hair prep production- something that guards your hair against heat, etc. Mousse is good as well as a curling iron! And as others have said, practice, practice, practice!

There are quite a few threads in the Beauty forum that should help you learn how best to do victory rolls, etc. Just search and read away. Good luck in your future hair style adventures! :)

De-frizzifying hair spray or a thick cream! make sure your hair is completely dry unless your doing pin curls!

I have the same type of hair as you and mine always gets limp and derpy when I try to do victory rolls or dry pin curls when my hair is damp.

Also like Ginger M. said, ratt the heck out of your bangs to get a cute pouf! ^.^ Helps the style last longer too!

I'll have to try it again this weekend, and re-watch some more videos. Hopefully practice makes perfect :) Thanks for your advice!

yeah get a good single row ratting comb and just do like 10brushes down and spray some and then do another ten and so on until you get it to the texture you think will work perfect for curls and while curling it under take your comb and smooth out the top.. trying spraying some shine spray on it too, see if that helps smooth out the top :) good luck

lol ok, good to know I'm not the only one. I had my hair thinned out a while back, and am due for another cut, but I think those smaller hairs are poking through rather bad, I'll have to try the pomade method out in combination with the ratting :)

Thanks, I appreciate it. I put mousse in my hair to help keep it together at the ends so I could roll the hair, and hair spray to hold it in place once I got it there, and to  to tame the fly aways, but I ended up in the shower cause my hair was a mess and I needed to start over.  I might sound dumb asking this, but what is a hair production product that I could use? I have never been the type to do much to my hair: wash, mousse, scrunch, and go.I have no clue what hair care products I should use, or how to properly use them lol. I'll have o check the forums out more in depth :)

I'm just glad to hear that it's not as easy as the videos make it out to be lol. They actually have hair spray that defrizzes hair? Amazing! Like I mentioned in my other reply, I have no clue about hair care, so I'm really lost, but I can usually do a good job imitating once I try it out a few times. I just am scared to rat my hair. I kept feeling like it would make it look messier. I tried it dry and it was a hot mess, the pictures you see were after it was washed and I went at it again while it was damp. Gave it some mousse and hair spray, but had to use a lot of pins to pin it down cause it seemed to poof a lot in the front. I noticed a lot of the rolls look real nice on the inside, and you can usually see through it. Mine were a bit messy looking on the inside, and I think that was due to the fact that I have a slight tapper in my hair and it was hard to get the ends to stay together so I could get it to roll.

Oh dear...if you can, try not to get your hair thinned out anymore. It is very difficult to get a smooth look when that's done. I had it done several years ago and regretted it. Try long chunky layers instead, especially at the back in the crown area where the hair seems the heaviest.

I get my best curls when I use a styling lotion, then put my hair up in hot rollers. The smaller the sections, the better...1 to 1 1/2 inch wide and not too thick. (Sometimes I only have enough rollers for the front of my head, so I have to do it in 2 sets or use curling iron for the back.) While they cool down, do your makeup. Then unroll the curls carefully. After they are totally cooled down, brush them out.

Start sectioning the peices you want to roll, ratting just at the root to about 3 inches up. Create a roll, smoothing out the top with a teeny bit of pomade on your fingertips and a comb to smooth a little more. Pin when you get it to look the way you want. Use as many pins as you need to, but as hidden as you can get. Add hairspray and after you've finished and voila!!

It does take practice and I still have trouble doing my left side...rarely turns out as good as the right. Good luck!!

Awesome instructions! I really appreciate it. I get less head aches when I thin my hair lol so I was kind of liking it, but it doesn't seem too forgiving when I started trying out the pin up hair styles.

So the large chunks helped lift some weight off your head while still allowing you to style with less fly aways? Do you have any pictures of what that looks like when you got the large chunks? I'm so scared to do anything drastic to my hair cause I have always been plain Jane lol.

Is there a pomade brand that is best or just get whatever is cheapest?

I did pin curls all over my hair and left them in over night and then took them out and went from there. I too can only do the front half of my hair if using rollers to curls them, glad I'm not alone lol. When I had tried to die my hair black I use about 3-4 boxes of hair dye, but now it's a lot shorter than it use to be so I might not need that many, but still super thick, which is my main problem.

The pictures at the end of the slideshow are what the hair looked like after taking my pin curls down, and prior to starting to work on it. I loved the way those turned out, but the rolling is something I feel will take me a while to master :) Thanks for your input it was very insightful. I was wondering if taking smaller sections would work. I'm going to check out your pictures and see what your working with since we have similar hair problems :)

No problem! My hair is pretty short now...killed the ends going from died black to red. Tried to find a good shot of my hair before, but not much luck...but this is what I mean:

Ignore the color as much as you can on this one...it's horrific, but it really shows the different layers well!

Tell your hairdresser you want long layers throughout with shorter layers around the crown...no shorter than 5 inches. Hope that helps!
