I'm so sorry to hear about you dad passing away. I think getting a tattoo to remember him by is a lovely idea. You could either do a lovely portrait of him or a combination of a few things that remind you of him or an image of something special that meant something to both of you. As to where you should place it that's really a personal choice. If it's something you want to be able to see everyday then I would say somewhere on you arm but if you want something larger the upper back is always a great place.
