Easy Pin Curls - Spoolies? Suggestions?

So I really hate doing pin curls but I love the results. Has anyone ever used spoolies? Do they produce a similar result? Or do you know of another gadget for lazy girls?

A friend of mine uses spoolies and loves them, but my hair just won't hold the curl. Yours looks more like her texture/length, so I say go for it!

i have never tried them, but when im feelin lazy i will put the front of my hair in pin curls and the back in foam rollers . first i take my section of hair spritz it with hairspray curl it with an iron and then roll that curl around a foam roller or pin it. if i dont use the spray my curl will fall flat in 30 min! spray and then let them cool completly before you take them out. and the longer i leave them in the longer they last! hope this helps some.

Hey! I've used spring hair clips (these suckers) on a few people before. I don't have any pictures to show you but they turned out great on shorter hair!

I am gonna try spoolies, my blonde hair is pretty fine and using these will probably help with body and hold the curl. Does anyone have any sugesstions on a good volumizing product for fine hair and how long do we keep the spoolies in.

Also, can we get them at Sally Beauty supply or any beauty supply store?

If you can't find them locally, you can order them from The Vermont Country Store. My and my friend's sets are actually like hot rollers. They're called Lock N Roll, by Clairol. I'm not sure where she bought hers, and I was lucky enough to find my set at a thrift store.

I have some just like this as well! I found mine at Meijers....not sure of that is only in Michigan though.

I have never seen those before. Do they do funny things to the curl because they are soft plastic? Do the curls on the side that you sleep on get squashed or kinked?

I like to use magnetic rollers, and after trying other wet setting types of rollers, I always end up going back to them. Those were the first types of rollers that I used when I started doing wet sets, which may be why I like them. I tried perm rods and sponge rollers, but liked my curls better with the magnetic rollers. I even sleep in them sometimes (which takes a bit of getting used to...lol!). I like my vintage hot roller set when I am in a hurry, but prefer how my hair looks when I use my magnetic rollers.

But, I can't resist trying a new curling method when I see one. I may just have to try those. :)

The curls don't get squashed because they're protected in a little "cage" of sorts, but because the post is so short, and it's rolled sideways to the head, it's really more of a pincurl than a roller curl.

OMG Lula - that's a lot of work! You can get the same type of result in 15-20 minutes using hot rollers. Magnetic rollers are a huge pain in the butt! You have dedication! Nothing is worth sleeping in those! I can't beleive you can do that - I am in awe! - truly!

I actually got the spoolies for wet sets on Ebay. I may get the hot spoolies as well - we'll see!

I have come up with a cheater way of doing pin curls. All you need are little little hair rubber bands, pins, hairspray.

1. Section the hair that you want curled.
2. Tie a rubber band 3 inches from scalp.
The bands help to keep the hair stabilized while you play with it.
3. Wet the section of hair.
4. Twist hair around your two index fingers.
5. Once you have the desired effect, you pin the hair.
The secret is to crisscross the pins to secure.
6. Spray hairspray on top and underneath and inside the curl.
7. After it dries you can cut the rubber bands out or just leave them in.
It you want to quicken the drying, just use a hair dryer.


After a little practice, you can finish in less than 10 minutes.
