What's your favorite? What pieces are essential under your vintage and retro dresses?

Personally, I never wear a dress without an open bottom girdle underneath. Not only does it hold my tummy in and keep my butt from jiggling too much, it also holds up my stockings. I also like to wear a corset/cincher under tight dresses to make my waist just a little tinier.

Under high waisted pants I wear a spanks...just for that extra firmness and to keep my tummy in.

Thanks for the replies.
I used to wear a waist training corset, but lost weight so am now too small for them. Plus, it used to push my shoulders up so i'd look awkward.
As for the full body ones (cant remember what theyre called), I'm a real pear shape, with big hips (and that bloody dreaded indentation) and a small chest, so can never find one to fit.
I love the one girdle from What Katie Did (http://www.whatkatiedid.com/product/521/girdle), just trying to convince myself to spend the money :P Hope its good.
I also cant wear too long girdles, as my upper body is pretty short (curved spine from cancer ect), so even the unsuccessful girdle (which i'll be sending back) rests closer to my bra than it probably should. I'm pretty tempted to get a looser sized girdle in the hopes of it skimming over these 'dents', but concerned it then wont hold up my suspenders. Either that, or do some have boning in them to smooth over these areas? Cant be the only person with this problem..i hope :)

Found a pic that show a mild form of what i'm on about. The indent between hips and start of legs: http://www.fashionisingpictures.net/photoshoots/LaraStonenaked.jpg

Feel free to start a new thread about finding undergarments for certain body issues. I'm sure there are other girls out there with similar problems, and will make a good topic. Let's keep this thread to a general discussion about underpinnings. Thanks!

This info is so useful! Thank you! And it looks like I will be web shopping all day for new hosiery! What Katie did is an awesome website I may not have found without your suggestions.  Thank you for the advice on the tulle illusions – the scars never really bother me, but it’s amazing how often people point them out and how easily they can be camouflaged with a nice pair of ‘hose. The prices are great for someone like me who is just learning all the new binding/shape wear and underpinnings. Now… what’s the trick to clipping those garter buggers more easily? Ha!

The best seamed stockings are from What Katie Did and Secrets In Lace IMO. Loads of colour and denier options, you can chose from fully fashioned or every day RHT, some even have lace tops. The seamed tulle mesh stockings from WKD are gorgeous, they have lace tops -  seamed tulle stockings. They are $18.00 a pair, but really hard to rip...and I destroy sockings!   The tulle creates a kind of optical illusion that makes your legs look more shapely, I have, not scars, but dark marks on my legs. the tulle seems to reduce their appearence...sort of breaks them up if that makes sense.

But probably any of the darker colours would work including the browns and bronze stockings Secrets In Lace have, they are beautiful. I'd just avoid the full contrast ones (nude with black seams), the nude on them is really sheer, you can see everything through them.

I just purchased my very first OBG and am waiting for it to arrive! I found this discussion AFTER I made my purchase. So I was very pleased to see that this is the first choice of many who wear dresses. I have a massive collection of the cutest dresses and had to step outside of what I normally wear to cover new scars on my legs (due to an outbreak of a skin disease, blah!), and wasn’t sure what the best under garment would be. I’m glad I found this thread… I am waiting until it arrives to purchase hosiery.

Any suggestions on the best kind/brand to use with garter snaps? I’m not looking to really cover/hide my legs, just kind of tone down the appearance of the scars. So color really doesn’t matter, any kind would do. Seemed, elastic at the top, lace tops?

Ha! practice!  LOL

Have fun at WKD . Katie is the best, they have really helpfull staff too who will be happy to advise on anything.

I want my boobies to look a little pointy..does anyone have a suggestion for a pointy brazier?  (New to Pin up in San Diego)

I have not bought anything yet from them, but I am either going to go to the store in Hollywood or will by online. Them being What Katie Did. Check them out:

If you google "bullet bra" you'll find plenty for sale. If you don't want a dramatic point, but just a slight one try the Playtex 18 hour bra in lace (you can get them at Walmart). They have a nice vintage look and give you a slight point that looks great under a sweater.

An OBG for sure! Usually I'll wear high waisted panties or panty girdles under dresses and skirts if I want something low maintenance and/or I'm not wearing stockings that day.
