Would you take out an ad in a magazine showcasing your modeling work?

Hi everyone! I have seen ads now and then in various pinup magazines for pinup models. Do you think it is something you would consider doing (for affordable prices) or not? Do you think it would be worth a try or that your time would be better spent doing something else? I have been considering it because hey, putting your name out there is a great thing, but I am curious what you all think about it?

As a performer and director I have often thought about advertising in these magazines since I think it touches my demographic. If you are featured model, I think it makes sense...

Hello there! Sending my work to a mag is definitely something I would do. I have been thinking about a few mags that you can submit your pics for free, but they will always reconsider your pics first. I got to say and admit I'm disappointed in a mag that seems to have a lot of fame. They charge you for submitting just to consider you and when I saw quality of the prints, paper, and final product of the issue; in the end they just have a few pics and articles of some pinup models and a LOT of ads, many many ads and the mag is still very thin. It looked like a brochure. I mean, it costs more than a VOGUE mag, even the big issue that is almost as fat as a phone book with amazing quality.
Just be sure where to send and if submitting is free, just give it a try.

Thanks for the input. I actually meant would you buy ad space in a magazine? I have plenty of experience submitting work, have several publications under my belt and more due out soon. I agree that paying to submit work is very disappointing! I am always on the hunt for quality publications that do not charge to submit and I have found that very few actually do charge. I wish you luck with your future submissions! :)

Thanks for the input! I agree that it would make sense if you're featured in the magazine, I will keep that in mind for my future publications! I also think you should give it a try, many of them have very affordable ad space! One of those being Drive-In Magazine, they are offering a special right now: $30 for a full page, $15 for a half page and $45 for a back cover. I figure $15 for a half page is well worth a try! :)

This is a great question Melissa! I've actually contemplated this.  As you know, I am going to school for Marketing.  Marketing is EVERYTHING! If you want to get your name or your brand out there.. you must market. Someone could be completely awful at what they do, but if they market themselves, everyone will know who they are. It goes the other way too.  You could be completely amazing, the most gorgeous model in the world, but if you don't market yourself, if you don't get the word out about who you are and what you do, you will never get anywhere! Tell the world! SCREAM IT FROM ROOFTOPS!

Now to specifically answer your question..i think I would.  Magazines are so choosey... You can submit your photos for CONSIDERATION to be published but that doesn't always guarantee publication. If you were to take out an ad, you know that it would be automatically be published. The marketing benefit of an ad to the specific target market could tremendously help your business.

Point: Modeling or toothpaste...everything needs marketing.

Hope you and fam are doing well!!

xo

I'm not saying, pay your way into a magazine whatsoever,  do not PAY to be published, but if it's a cute little ad saying 'hey come check out my website for some cute pinup pictures and hairbows i make!', for a reasonable price, what the hey right? Why not. Now photographers and magazines CHARGING to get ahead in the queue in the picture pool is absolutely nonsense..

I want to be published/featured because I'm actually good at what i do,  Not because I shot with the right photographer and paid 500 dollars for 3 pictures and got my hair and makeup and posing instruction. You know what I mean?

I've actually had my ads in a few pinup magazines. I think it's good for exposure.

As an advertisement agency owner I believe it touches a very directioned public. So, it makes sense!

I see nothing wrong with buying an ad in a magazine (or ad space on a website, like this one) to promote your business. And if your business is you, then do what you can to promote your self. As Kathleen said, marketing is everything. If the magazine/website reaches your demographic and they have no problem with you promoting yourself (and why would they?), go for it!

Speaking of websites, let's open the conversation up to that as well. Websites reach more people then magazines do now (PL has 15,000 members, I doubt any of the pin up mags out there have that many subscriptions) and there are quite a few that cater to the industry, so why not take out a banner ad there as well?

As for paying to submit to a magazine, that is not what this thread is about, but it IS a great topic. There is a HUGE difference between selling ad space and charging models to be in your magazine. It would be wonderful if someone would start another thread about that. However, let's keep this one on track by staying with the "would you buy ad space to promote yourself" question.

Thank you.

Big Daddy Cool,

please send us an email to advertising@retrolovely.com we'd like to offer you a free quarter page ad for your business.

Most certainly not! In fact we would go so far as to say that magazines charging models advertising fees is an absolutely ridiculous concept that is no more than blatant revenue raising that does not support anybody except the magazines themselves.

The magazines will still be getting paid by you regardless of whether your ad gets you any work as a result or not...But fear not, Pinup Style Worldwide is working on several things that will start to reign in the industry, that unfortunately, thus far, is dis-fragmented, exploitative, and not a very supporting environment at all to be in...

We have already had words with Retro Lovely about their Star-Maker program (charging people for so-called 'sponsor coupons') so that models who know more people (who have 'more' friends), with 'more' money, can essentially have their way bought into the magazine...Another ridiculous concept that does nothing for anybody except the magazine itself...We believe they are also now charging a 'submission fee' for submissions by hopeful and aspiring models...It seems selling a magazine for a profit just isn't enough for some people...

Melissa, do you have a facebook page we can have a look at? If getting your name out there is something you are interested in, we can try and help out as best we can (and no, it won't cost you a single cent) xo

So, here is Pinup Style Worldwide again, selectively commenting on parts of something but not the whole picture.

Star Maker was indeed stood up to provide models with fans an opportunity to be published in a quality product that THEY COULD PROFIT FROM.  Repeat after us, that they could PROFIT FROM. Not go and do a shoot, pay a photographer for said shoot, submit to a print on demand publication so they could then have the privilege of buying said magazine with no additional opportunities.

We did this because space in our regular publication is finite. We could not give as many models the opportunities we did with our regular editions.  Now on top of the fact many models got free copies with Star Maker, several took advantage of a real wholesale price (models, the next time you are in a magcloud magazine, ask about the possibility of getting more copies at wholesale), which again made them money, and models here on PL, please, let us know where you ever make money with your modeling, by our accounts not many.

Retro Lovely has, from day one provided FREE, no cost, nothing to buy, FREE copies of our regular editions to models and photographers in those regular editions.  Our cover models have been receiving on average $500 - $750 in compensation for being on the cover. Many models have been able to make money with us, CASH, one model got an entire special edition of just her work with FULL PROFIT SHARING. She earned half the net profits from sales. She's made a few thousand dollars with us so far. Again we ask models here on PL... where that is even possible these days with so many websites and blogs such as yours reposting the images that more often than not cost them money to produce.

But by your accounts the industry is exploitative?

With that logic, this very website that you are poaching on, excuse us, posting on... is exploitative as well since they sell advertising which would in theory be clicked on by those individuals coming here, posting photos (content) networking.  Yet that is exactly what you yourself are working towards.

Thank goodness you've decided to reign in this industry!

Ironic that you'd announce that on a community website with a vibrant audience, who has many people taking active part in their forums and groups.

And since you never do any real research on what you spout off about permit us to clarify some points...

We have never charged a model a submission fee.
We have not accepted submissions directly from models for quite some time now.

We have also never sent mass emails to models or photographers asking them to blog for free either which you've managed to fit in quite a bit of in between reposting model photos on Facebook.

Maybe you should repost photos here on Pinup Lifestyle... if your logic of providing models more exposure on Facebook is valid, why not do it here as well?

Idea # 2 submit your own pictorial with a one time copy release. Magazines are always looking for material.
