Dressing in the 1950's

I love seeing the difference between how people dress nowadays and how they dressed back in the day. We have the thread about how everyday people dressed, http://www.pinuplifestyle.com/forum/topics/everyday-people-of-the-4..., but this article I found got me thinking about how people dressed when they were going places that we still go today.

I think it's amazing (and kind of sad) that we are going the same places they did, but the way we dress has drastically changed, and most of the time, not for the better.

So post up your then and now shots, and who knows, maybe if people see this thread, it will inspire them to dress a little nicer when they go out.

That picture of your mom and uncle is precious!  They look like two tiny adults, I love the little purse and his little-man suit.  Your kids are adorable too!

I try to wear a dress everyday (except at work) and people ask me if I am on my way to church!! Also, last year at the Road Rocket Rumble a woman asked me what was up with all the girls wearing dresses. Some people just don't understand "dressing up."

Thanks for sharing this thread with me.. This week at work  2x I was asked why I was so dressed up!  I was wearing a skirt, twin set, pearls and heels.   I remember my grandmother dressing up so classy every time she went out ( and my grandfather getting impatient because she took so long) but I was always so proud of her classic look.   Oh, I do have my casual days for sure ,but the reactions I get for wearing a dress or skirt (especially when its vintage) do surprise me.

Recently my husband and I went to the Opera in Budapest while on vacation. We both dressed to the nines. I assumed that is how everyone dressed when they went to such a formal event. Boy, was I wrong. We were both so surprised to only see a few individuals dressed up. Most of the people were very casual. Below are some of the photos we took.

This thread has been a real wakeup call for me! I definitely dress up when I'm going out for the evening, but when I'm just out and about on a regular day doing errands etc (yes, even going to the movies or Disneyland) I am a t-shirt wearing fiend. This little photo gallery has made me realize what a disservice I am doing to myself! I need to kick it up several notches and dress accordingly at ALL TIMES! Thank you so much for helping me realize the mistakes I've been making.

Can I just say; WOW, where do you people live? I dress up almost everyday (I started this thread, I better practice what I preach) and I NEVER get dirty looks. I get smiles, people stop to talk, everyone from young girls (who think I'm a princess) to old people who say I remind them of their youth. Just remember that you are the one doing the right thing, and when people look at you, always smile back. If they whisper, smile. If they ask why you are so dressed up, maybe they just want to start a conversation. Dressing classy should always go hand in hand with acting classy. If someone is rude, set an example for how they SHOULD be acting. 

Think of us as the Glamour Squad, making the world a better (and better looking) place, one Pin Up at a time.

The frosts are quite thick already and my work place is a large open building, where they try to maintain temperatures but I'm still becoming very cold in my skirts and cardigans, even when I try layering a little. Wow! Well I know that I certainly don't dress the way I did back then. I recently found some of my old Navy pics and even at our house partys everyone was dressed up for the occassion. That was in the early 70's. Is it because we're always too busy running around trying to do too many things just to say we did them?

I disagree, we just have too many choices now but normally people just don't want to take the time to get dressed and just take the easy route.  But who cares how everybody else is dressing, dress the way you want and don't worry how everybody else looks.  I prefer the pin up style and 50's inspired vintage clothing because it is glamourous and sexy and it definitely stands out.  Don't follow what everybody else is doing, make your own style even if you are inspired from a certain era.

So where are all you lovely ladies from? I could use some support for the cause here in Canberra Australia.

When I made the transition to follow my passion for the 40's & 50's I got strange looks for the first week or two at work, and then people started actually asking me about it which was cool.

Unfortunately I seem to be alone in how I dress and although we have ONE vintage inspired shop here in town, no one else I see regularly at work, events or at friend's places dresses the way I do. Not that I mind of course, it's nice standing out because you look sexy and confident and appropriate, but I'd love to have a 'dressing sister' in town. :-)
