"I was not trying to be shocking, or to be a pioneer. I wasn't trying to change society, or to be ahead of my time. I didn't think of myself as liberated, and I don't believe that I did anything important. I was just myself. I didn't know any other way to be, or any other way to live."- Bettie Page 1923-2008

Bettie Page dies at 85

Bettie Page, the legendary 1950s pin-up queen with a shoulder-length pageboy hairdo and kitschy bangs whose saucy photos helped usher in the sexual revolution of the 1960s, has died, the L.A Times is reporting. She was 85.
She suffered a heart attack one week ago and never regained consciousness.

Page, whose later life was marked by depression, violent mood swings and several years in a state mental institution, died at a Los Angeles hospital where she had been on life support since she had a heart attack on Dec. 2, according to her agent, Mark Roesler.

Her popularity as an underground, guilty pleasures phenomenon has continued to soar despite the fact that the reclusive Page disappeared almost a half century ago. A cult-culture figure, Page was most famous for the estimated 20,000 4-by-5-inch black-and-white glossy photographs taken by amateur shutterbugs from 1949 and to 1957.

Such an amazing woman.....Rest in Peace dear Bettie.
She was an inspiration and treasure she will be missed dearly.
As long as there are people who "get" this site, Betty will be remembered and cherished.

And while her passing is sad, the Irish in me wants a good old fashioned wake to honor her life.
So strike up the band and let's raise our glasses to toast one hell of a dame.
She was an inspiration to us all.

It's a very sad day indeed and the end of an era
what a loss...her image is tattooed on so many peoples hearts & minds, you will be sorely missed...mourn you til we join you bettie...
my god; so very sad
Rest in Peace Betty Page. You ARE an inspiration to women around the world. You will be truly missed, but I am so glad your memory will live on in your modeling photos. Thank you for the courage and self respect you have shown women they are capable of having!
While one of the most unique spirits, one of the only true beauties on this earth will be sorely missed, I try not to think of this as a "sad" day. As someone who saw their grandpa go through a very similar experience (he was in the hospital with pneumonia, then had two strokes and wouldn't come out of a coma, but we had talked to him and knew he wished to be off life support), it's more of a relief to know that she is no longer sick or in pain. I wish the best to her loved ones, and hope that she will always be remembered as members of this community see her- an icon like no other.
here is another really nice memorial article i found

Rest in peace Beautiful Bettie. Though you are gone from this world we live in, you will live on in the hearts of us all.
:(

Respect and gratitude.
I am crestfallen. Bettie - you changed everything for me, and for so many other women during this past century. You deserve that spot in heaven. You will live on through all of us, and you will be missed dearly.

Bettie, forever.
