Some insight into the Calendar Photo Ratings system.

Don't go by what you see, the number of comments on a photo or number of views means nothing, just a tidbit, many of the current TOP photos have 0 comments. 3 people voting a photo Five stars, could drive that photo to the top, while a photo getting rated 10 times, with 2 five star votes, and a couple ones and twos may not match the one with 3 five star votes. Its all statistics, we don't do anything half assed here at PL like leaving myspace comments to count a vote, funk that, we're about metrics and fairness =) Ratings are being tracked to crazy decimal points... check this sample rating: 3.1875000000001 out of 5 .

How many tenths is that? Yup, serious business... One photographer pulled out his photos this morning stating the "competition" was a joke. Little did he know that his photo was by the numbers well ranked. Oh well, go ahead and walk off stage while singing with top 16 in American Idol for public votes thats fine. It's not on us =) And don't mind being near the last pages either, many photos near the last pages have the top rank, this means people are totally being picky, which is fantastic. Think you know the outcome by selecting "Display by Top Rated"? BRRRRT The software will not count all the decimal places in the database, all 1s,2s,3s, etc will be lumped in chunks in no real order...

As you can see ranking has GREAT power vs voting. And of course, there are more than 12 slots for the calendar, and we will make sure its an amazing and diverse spread. Nowhere did we state ONLY/ALL THE TOP 12 PHOTOGRAPHS would make it in...

NOW GO VOTE! ! ! ! Be as picky as we are! It's anonymous!

The photographer (me) who pulled his images from the "competition" did so because of the ridiculous judging that took place for the initial cut. When an image like my avatar didn't make the cut and 6 images of the same model standing beside the same vintage Chevy did make the cut, something was a bit odd. Not that the images of the model next to the Chevy are bad, but 6 similar images making the initial cut? Come on.

That also includes all photos submitted by the same person, which may or may not be photos from the same set.

Your avatar image (or any like it) was never even submitted for consideration. You submitted only three photos - all of which were the same model, in the same setting. Two of those made it thru to the second round. I'm not sure you how think the Chevy photos were treated any differently than yours.

David, if you read my post above, you would know that you have no room to complain about the judging and 6 similar photos making it into this round. Until PL releases a calendar with 6 of the same model with the same Chevy your argument holds no validity, all you are saying is that your avatar was better than those photos. As an artist you are entitled to your opinion, however as judges, those that did the judging are also entitled to theirs. It was done completely independent and then the same formula was utilized to pick those with the highest combined ratings to move them onto this public vote round. I respect your request to remove your photos, however I will not continue to discuss this topic in an open forum as I have already given more than adequate information to prove the rating is WELL BEYOND fair. I'm sorry that you felt the need to remove your photos, and in turn missed a great chance of exposure both for your subject and your art.

Perhaps you can explain the rating system that put 6 nearly identical photos through to the second round. I'm sure other photographers who had images that didn't make the cut would also like to know.

3 people independently voted photo by photo thru all 600+ submissions with the albums sorted BY RANDOM. Thus each and every single photo was INDIVIDUALLY viewed, judged, and rated. Can it even get more fair than that? The filter script was run, and boom we have finalists. Does this explain why a few similar photos made it in? I respect your work, however I don't respect the line of questioning when your work was fairly judged and some of your work was selected. I hope this dissection of the process motivates you for next years contest, we'd love to see more thru your lens.

I'm just happy so many of mine got picked for the finals..I guess what threw me off the most was that you 3 weren't going to do the whole thing and we were left to pick what gets it..That can be a bad thing if you don't have your army here saying," VOTE 5 STARS FOR ME!" I do..I am amazed with how many people came here FOR me..That means a lot, they know how hard I work and really wanna see this happen for me..Some just want their face in the calendar..lol..The people who are here for me aren't just people I photographed, they're other photographers and models I never touched..I guess when I see that a photographer who hasn't worked as hard get more attention then one that has (and you can tell by their work) it upsets me. I've always put my heart into everything that I do, I may not be the best photographer on the site, but I know that my heart is in this all the way..This isn't a trend for me..I plan on doing this till I can't anymore, I can't say the same for everyone in the finals. One or two okay shots out of a port of 800 photos doesn't deserve this kind of recognition.
That's all from me though! Thank you for bringing me this far! I hope I have something I can send my mom and she can be proud!

CHAD, your comments have been removed, I will no permit any trash talking about peoples work, speak with your votes, if you read up you'd also see that when you rate a photo with 1 star it affects the rating negatively. It's up to you to rate honestly. The power of opinion is in your hands at this point and your voice is silent. You feel many of the photos in there are not pinup, allow me to remind you that this is not the cheesecake pinup calendar, nor the girls and cars calendar. This is the Pinup Lifestyle calendar, that will include fetish and all other likes of the pinup world. If you are here for a certain segment then sir you do not appreciate the lifestyle and are in the wrong place.

Who would have ever imagined a contest could have great photos and less great photos, winner AND losers, what a friggin surprise!

I'll remind you all with this statement that PL is not a democracy altho we went thru GREAT lengths to be fair well beyond ANY contest you've ever put your photos into. If you're gonna whine, i'll show you to the cheese factory outside.
