Do you think it matters if "pinups" don't live the pinup lifestyle every day?

Do you think it matters that me and other models like me aren't 'traditional' pin-up? The majority of my pictures aren't really pin-up at all, they are pin-up inspired, whether it be because of my hairstyle or my pose or the fact that I'm wearing fully fashioned stockings.

Does it annoy you when people who don't really live the Pin-Up Lifestyle at all, list themselves alongside classic pin-ups?

I often feel like certain people in the 'industry' look down on me because I don't wear full skirts and because I listen to Korn and because I wear more modern clothes, and I'm not really a classic pin-up at all.

What're your thoughts?

I'm much more a fan of traditional and classic pinup....just more my thing.  That said, the more modern pinup stuff is everywhere...I wouldn't say it annoys me.

There are several things that I saw in your post to comment on.  First, the term, "industry" for pinup is a little over done in my opinion.  At most, it is a cottage industry, with a few people making enough from it to live off of.  Even when you include "vintage" very few actually make a living wage from what I view as an aesthetic rather than lifestyle.

Second, within the pinup thing is a whole host of vastly different styles.  Punkabilly, psychobilly, rockabilly... and then me, with my quiet little vintage.  We all are a part of the pin up aesthetic.

I think I can safely say that I am one of the few people who are on the cusp of making pin up/vintage a full time career.  I rarely wear it, but I have a crap load of knowledge about fashion history in my head that I started collecting before some of the readers of this thread were born.  Do I care that I am not, uh, I guess, one of the "in crowd?"

Seriously?

No.

This is a hobby; an aesthetic.  It can be a lifestyle if you want it to be, but the thing is, it should be fun.  And it should add to your life, not control it.  If it isn't fun, why do it?

When I start feeling like I should be more.... whatever, I remind myself that I am doing what I like and I am getting paid for it.  And that, for me, is pretty darn cool.

So, have fun.  And when it isn't fun, find a way to make it fun or don't do it.

edited to say--- love your pics.  You bring something to the shoot far more than just a pretty face.  Should you ever find yourself in San Francisco... well, you know.  Email

Yeah, that's why I put industry in inverted commas, because technically it's not really an industry at all.

I do love pin-up, I have a genuine love for vintage films and music and fashion, but that's not the only thing I love. I love cute little indie movies and skinny jeans and cuddling up in a big baggy hoodie. I don't want to look like I'm trying to emulate a glamour puss from the 40s but sometimes it feels like I'm accused of band-wagoning or of not having a genuine love for pin-up, simply because I don't look like I could've stepped right out of a film noir movie set.

It really doesn't matter if you have the pinup lifestyle, or if you don't! No one will look down on you for not wearing vintage inspired/vintage clothing all the time. I mean right now I'm wearing bootcut jeans and a tee with no makeup whatsoever.

If it does annoy someone that you aren't a "traditional" pinup, then really that is being a little closed minded. Ignore what anyone says and if it makes YOU happy then continue as you are.

As a madam, we see every photo that is uploaded. Some stay true to the traditional, some don't.

and as far as listening to korn ect, sorry to be harsh but not one person on here will listen to only one type of music. Personally, My first love is psychobilly. But I also love ska, punk, metal, nu-metal ect.

To reitterate, if it makes you happy that is all that matters :)

Alice.. I'm just like you... two of my favorite bands are At the Gates & Lamb of God... not rockabilly/retro in the least. I don't wear fully fashioned stockings, heels, skirts and make up every single day. I wear jeans, flip flops and tee shirts.. I do not live the pin up lifestyle.. :)

that being said, you're gorgeous, and no one should judge you because you don't look like you've stepped outta Mad Men, or Grease, or a 1940's Norman Rockwell painting. <3

p.s.

WTF is Punkabilly?????

<3

You are a babe.

that answers my question, thanks Rox. lol

@Alice. you are too <3

To paraphrase from someone above... Do it to the extent that you enjoy! I just recently started wading into the Pin Up waters myself and have become completely enthralled. However, realistically-- at least at this time-- it wouldn't even be possible to  live the Pin Up "lifestyle" 24/7. For me, the most important part is the hair and make-up... I'm wearing sweats and a black wife beater tank right now, but my hair and make-up are full Pin Up and I feel d*mn sexy! As weird as it sounds, when I have my hair and make up this way I just feel like a different part of me comes out-- a part I really love. I'm looking forward to digging deeper into that, but it's my own choice how far I go with it, just like it's your own choice too!! From what I can tell just by reading other forum threads, this place is full of some amazing people who just love sharing their passion for Pin Up with other passionate for Pin Up people!

Theres really a small amount of people who do make a living from this "industry" and the only person I can think of at the top of my head is Dita Von Teese. She's the only woman actually known in Hollywood as a burlesque dancer / pin up when there are still TONS of beautiful women doing it. Its about having fun really! I would love to make a name for myself, but theres a very slim chance of that actually happening.

In my opinion anyone can be a pin up with the right photographer, clothing and makeup. Personally though, I'm a fan of the classic / traditional pinup.

Oh and I think you're stunning! :)

I feel the same hun. I have a very Wide variety of interests. I love the style but I don't wear it much. Most of what I do wear is far from that era. Like many have said it's just something to enjoy from time to time.

Plus your beautiful, don't worry about what others think, it's what you think of yourself!

I don't think it matters. I think pinup is beautiful regardless if it's classic or modern. I don't live the pinup lifestyle. I'm barely getting into it, I dress or style myself like that for special occasions. Besides as long as you're happy then don't worry about others.
