Photograph turnaround

     What is the typical turnaround time between the shoot, seeing proofs, edited photos, and ultimately receiving the final product?  Of course I know all photgraphers are different, so this is a general question for them and models.  I have a desire to work to build my portfolio, but it seems as though it will take forever just to get a handful of shots.  Any favorite photographers in the Houston Area?

I found a load of photags willing to do trade shoots on model mayhem. If you have a good portfolio, are professional and show them that they will get some great images for their time, I'm sure they will be willing to work with you!

Honestly, I would never give an unedited disk of shots away.  Some do, though. My name goes on those pictures and I want to make sure the quality is of the caliber that I am pleased with. 

 

I promise far less than I think I will be able to provide, and then make sure I can provide at least what was promised.  Generally, I will promise five edited shots per shoot and deliver more than that. 

 

It isn't just luck to find TF shoots.  With the digital age, everyone can be a photographer-- if you own an iPhone or a camera.  The quality of shooter is the issue.  I have said it before and I will say it again.  If you want to start, get yourself a friend with a camera.  Better yet, get several friends and several cameras and tons of clothes and a large-ish private room.  Bring a bottle of wine or some beer.  Take pictures.  Try on clothes.  Help each other with what poses look good.  Laugh.  A lot.  What you get out of an evening like that is a huge amount of confidence posing, some great pictures and some experience behind the camera.  Now you have something else in your port and you can go shopping for the best photographer you can find on MM.  Seriously, if you are cute, there are TONS of photographers who want to take your picture and you do not have to pay them. Just keep in mind that pay, or no pay, really changes the nature of who has control over the shoot.

For us... it can be days to months to sometimes years... and even sometimes... NEVER. 
Paid shoots have faster turn around and guarantees.
Free/Trade shoots don't.

If the model is bad at modeling or the shoot just didn't work out... or the model had a nasty attitude or stole something from us at the shoot... we aren't likely to tell the model anything and just avoid talking to her or getting her photos.   Nasty attitudes or diva mentalities really turn a photographer off (remember that a photog has to look at your face and body all day, and then also look at you again later during the editing time)... making a bad impression means you get put on the bottom of the pile... or all of your photos get stored or deleted in the "NEVER" pile.
Especially when dealing with TRADE shoots... photographers don't want to associate themselves with models who are unprofessional or rude or BAD at modelling.  It's a HUGE turn-off, for us, when a model shows up to a shoot with a few people and expects us to do what she says (we've blown a lot of girls off who do stuff, like that... and we never fear the "WE'LL TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOU" response, because our work speaks for itself... and there is an endless sea of budding talent.  There are, in fact, more models than we would ever know what to do with!)   We're not saying that anyone HERE is nasty or hard to work with, specifically... just giving our perspective and experience.  
The truth is... you PAY for what you get... either in kindness and doing an amazing job... or cold hard cash.  If you want to work with great photographers and have a great portfolio, be willing to shill out some dough... or work four times harder to do trade shoots with amateurs and hope you get something back (and that it's decent).

I do hope that is just speaking from experience and not because you think I have said something offensive.  I do my best to be sweet, kind, professional, and respectful of those I work and speak with.  As far as the question about turn around goes, I was actually wanting to first know about paying for photographs, seeing as I have not really had the opportunity to work for trade.  I do admit I am an amateur when it comes to the amount of actual pinup experience I have, but I have quite a few years as a dancer and actress, so I hope that I would bring something interesting.  I will say that it appears that the same thing can be said for photgraphers when it comes to quality and professionalism.  If a photographer is unpleasant to work with and produces shots that are less than desirable, of course a model is not likely to recommend them or even show those photos.  Looks like it is a great time to remember to treat others as you would like to be treated.  :)

If it takes more than 2 weeks to get your images back from a professional photographer, I would call the photographer.  Nothing should take that long if their competent.

 

Be careful who you work with, there's quite a number of flakes and poseurs in this business.

I have a far different philosophy than FFP.  If you are in one of my shoots, whether I am shooting or styling, it is my job to make you look your best.  If that means I show you the poses I want, fine, if that means I take more pictures because I am not in love with the first few, fine.  But in the end, it is my job to make you look as good as you can look.  If a model is less than pleasant, I just won't work with her again. 

 

Yes, there are many, many models out there, but I only have one reputation.  Each model gets my full attention, respect and follow through, not only because they deserve it, but because my word is important to me.

Regarding your first comment below, I agree. There are some people I've shot with that the photos will never see the light of day. As a model, I don't want bad pictures of me out there, and I can imagine as a photographer you wouldn't want your name on anything horrible either. If it's a paid shoot, you deliver, always. But if it's trade, bad is way worse then none.

 

As to your second comment that I have quoted below, PREACH IT! That is the truth, plain and simple. Trade shoots are 2 people doing favors for each other, and each person should be treated that way. And whether you are paying or not, kindness is always it's best reward.

Some of my favorite shots were taken by me or someone with a cell phone. Now, that's some good turn around time :) However, I usually get shots back within a week or two. I did learn a lesson the hard way. I answered a casting call for TFP and I was told it would be about a month before I saw any pics. That was over 2mos ago. When I checked the photog's site, it was obvious that she was busy editing her friends photos first. I was the only non-friend model she shot. I'm disappointed, but I will live. In the end, I had a really great time on the shoot and realized that I need to ask more questions. I'm in the process of working out 3 different shoots right now. Since I don't do this as a job, I don't get overly dramatic when a photog needs to boot me to a different day or time. Plus, the holidays are coming up and people have lives and family to tend to. All in all, it depends on what you want from your experience. All the best, Hellz
