For those of you who make your own clothes...
My question for you is, in your opinion, is it better than buying already made pin-up clothing and pieces? Do you think its cheaper to make your own clothes?
I don't know how to sew or make any clothing, but I do own a fairly new sewing machine. I am wondering because my budget is so tight, if making my own clothing is financially more wise than buying pin up clothing from online stores and such. Do you think a person with no knowledge of sewing or dressmaking can learn how to make pin up clothing?

I think you can start with simple dresses rather inexpensively. Start off with a Cheap clearance fabric to practice before moving on to pricier fabrics. Dress sizes can be different than shirt and pants sizes. I have a combination of styles in my closet....some made by me and some store bought. I find Pin up doesn't have to be any specific style. Also a Night wear vs Day time really ups your prices. Look for sun dresses and not Evening Gowns and you will be able to stretch your retro fashion dollar. Also every time the retro style comes around hit clearance sales most folks don't convert so the clearance racks usually hide some swingin' swag...

For a bargain on fabric check out clearance racks at the fabric stores.
If you are in the states if you register at Hobby Lobby & Joann Fabrics they will send you coupons via mail & email. There for saving you more money. But like Mrs. Amy said definetly start with cheaper fabric. There is awesome some great websites that offer cute clothes with a vintage esque feel.

We all love clothes, shoes, purses, etc. but in todays society why would anyone in their right mind spend more than 70 bux on shoes. Or over 80 bux on a dress. There is no way I would ever do that. Sewing your own Pin Up clothing isn't as hard as you may think it is! First I would recommend finding what style you like the most (50's, 60's...) and then creating the overall look you want to go for.
There are A TON of vintage patterns available as well as current patterns that can be altered to suit your retro-sheik style! Vogue has a few fabulous patterns available that range from the 40's to the 80's. The 50's dresses are the best of the bunch, in my opinion, and are worth the investment! check out http://www.clubbmv.com for some epic deals on patterns! I believe there is a sale going on right now too... $2.99/pattern? AWWWW YEAHHHH
As for the cost, the fabric is where you will get bit in the wallet. Finer fabrics will cost more but with sites like http://www.denverfabrics.com, you should be able to find what you're looking for at a good price!Start with Broadcloth for your first few pieces and then move up to the nicer fabrics once you have your sewing skills down. I would recommend reading books on sewing and researching websites to see what others have done. There are a METRIC TON of tutorials out there... I'm very certain that you can find one to suit your sewing level! Even if you have never sewn in your life, if you can read and learn, you CAN SEW!
Check out Threadbangers YouTube vids for some well crafted and enjoyable tutorials! They range from clothing to home wares to just about everything in between! While not rooted in Vintage, the skills they showcase can be used for any project! Personally, I LOVE Threadbanger and miss their website...
For "store bought" pieces, check the regular Pin Up Clothing sites for sales as well as the reproduction sites for deals on pieces you love and can't make. There are also a TON of ways to alter clothing you already have to fit your newly minted vintage style!
While the links posted by Inga are certainly helpful, I didn't see very many Pin Up Styles referenced. Diamond Princess, do your research and really look for what you are trying to achieve. The rest is up to you!

Not only is making them cheaper, but it means you won't show up to an event wearing the same thing as everyone else. I have almost everything custom made, and I love it. As the others said, start simple and work your way up.

hello! well, i started to make pin up clothes 3 to 4 years ago, i strated doing for me, because here in brazil its so hard to find! than i started to make clothes to my friends.. and opened my own online store.. (www.myboydean.tanlup.com) honey, first, yes, it is way more cheap to make your own clothes, but some are not so easy to make it. if i were you i would started with skirts !! they are the easyest thing you can make!!

You can make your own clothes inexpensively if you keep an eye out for pattern sales (you can get Simplicity and McCalls patterns for $1 each at JoAnns/Hobby Lobby) and fabric sales. A lot of pin-up style clothes are very fitted so it might be easier for you to start out with a knit fabric pattern. The knit fabric stretches quite a bit so you dont have to be so finicky with getting the fit exactly right. Also sewing pattern clothing sizes are totally different than off the rack clothing sizes. I am a 6/8 in off the rack clothes and a 14 in pattern sizing so make sure you take your measurements and match them up to the chart on the back of the pattern before you buy fabric. Also, Patterns often have different sizes in different envelopes so make sure to get the correct one. If you go to JoAnns they have butterick patterns for 1.99 and Vogue patterns for 3.99 through saturday 11/19. I make tons of my own clothes so please feel free to message me with sewing questions.
