I have been completely captivated the last few days watching My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on TLC! I had no idea such people even still existed much less have evolved into a community with such old values but new extravagant fashions. I would LOVE to go to one of these things! Hope I put this in the right forum :)

I LOVE this show. If I get married again, you can bet I'll be using this show as inspiration.
OMG..I am also in love with this show!!! I have it set to record on my DVR. I can't believe how BIG the dresses are!! It shocks me that they let the little girls dress like they do, I have never seen a 7 year old in platform high heels! Too much! I can't miss an episode!! I secretly wanna be a gypsy too...minus all the housework!

I forgot to add my other favorite photos. Opps.

Look at the hats!!

Love the pink dresses here.... my bridesmaids are gonna wear this color for sure.

It lights up!!! Funny that just two days ago I told TC that my wedding dress when we get married is gonna light up.... he just shook his head....

*Snicker*...she kinda reminds me of a bug zapper! But, Props to her her for having the balls to wear it!! With my luck, I would catch on fire.
I watched it all weekend anytime I had a chance. I love it. I think it is great!! You are not the only one :)
i think it is SO cool to stick to your values... and i love that they LOVE these over the top weddings... we dont see them much in Canada- but Man oh Man- thank you TLC for bringing these weddings to my 56"!!!
Gypsies aren't all fun and light though! The men fight for no reason, they practically force themselves on girls, children dress like cheap strippers. The only good thing is the girls don't sleep around and the families are close. Overall though they're not a community to look up to! Yes they have outrageous dresses when they get married but where oh where does the money come from to fund these events? Hmmm....
To each their own. It's hard not to judge other cultures, but if it works for them, whatever culture of "them" it may be, then that's all that matters. There are so many cultures out there who think that the way we are over here in US is horrible, but again... to each their own. Regardless of culture, the dresses are FABULOUS!

I'm not judging without reason, I know people who've had animals stolen by gypsies, had their land invaded by their caravans and know people who've been abused by gypsies for no reason at all. I was chased by a bloomin' gypsy dog once when I was about 10!

It might seem different if you don't get them where you live because you only see them on tv and they don't show the stealing abusive side. Each to their own so long as it doesn't have a negative effect on others.

There are bad people in every community. They wouldn't invade peoples land if they were accepted in regular parks and in these times all land is owned, not like when they could camp in the woods a century ago. Also land and settlement requests are denied to them so even if they wanted to become more settled how could they? Some of the money would come from the men working yet having no real bills to pay other than food and gas for their generators. As for the children and other aspects I think one of they boys on the show said it best "who are we to question their way, and who are they to question our way". Also none of the women or men seem to be forced into this lifestyle. Not saying they are all great and wonderful just saying let's not keep the generation of discrimination alive!

Ok, so I don't quite get the gypsy thing... is it a heritage or a lifestyle or both? The only thing I know semi is that they live in trailers and travel...but they really don't own land or atleast rent land? I am just trying to understand because when I was watching the show I was confused about why they were so discriminated against.  Over in the US I have never used that term seriously to describe someone.
