Hi there-

I just wanted to pick your brains as to whether anyone has found a simple garter tutorial. I have seen a few- but they dont do anything with boning, and I would like to bone my garter. Anyone seen any patterns- blogs- tutorials on you tube or what not? Thanks for diggin deep!

Howdy!

Are you wanting to add boning to a garter belt that you already have, or do you want to create one from scratch?

I haven't made a tutorial on how to do this, but I probably could create one, as I make garter belts and boned garments. (We are connteted on Facebook, BTW)

If you wanted to work with an existing garment then the advice I give will be partially based on the style of the piece.

Dear Painted Lady,

You can add boning to any garter belt pattern. Follow any tutorial for a garterbelt... and sew on the boning casing to the inside of the garter belt where you want the bones to be. Do this before you add any finishing trims or elastic. Trim your boning at least one inch shorter than the casings. to allow for elastic and trim...Follow the rest of the garter belt tutorial to complele your garment. Simple as pie....

Visions of flossed garter belts dance in my head, now...

You can also use seam allowance to create bone channels.  Just topstitch it down, creating a tube slightly thicker than the boning is wide (the type of boning you use will make a difference).
