I've got a question.

I'm at the point do I need another lens or not.

I normaly use my Canon 30D together with my speedlight 430EX and my favorite lens, a Sigma 17-70mm.

I shoot at meetings and bit by bit some cars on lokation and models, and hopefully those two together in the near futhere.

What lenses do yoy use for this.

I'm at the point of should I go for a Canon 70-200 USM 4.0 non IS.

Or should I buy reflection screens and a umbrella for the Speedlight?

The thing you got with the 70-200 is the distance between yourself and the subject model or car.

Who will help me out.

take into consideration the 1.6 crop factor when using a 70-200. I have the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS which i rarely use at car shows (unless theyre on a course) cause the subjects are way too close. by the time i find find a good distance i have too many people walking in front of me. its a great piece of glass though, I use it mostly for mma events.

That was my point as well.

But when I will do a shoot on a seperate lokation, other tha a meeting or event.

Will it be a good lens than, or is the distance still way to far then?

At meetings I will keep on using my 17-70

Lets start here, why is it that you feel you need a new lens?

That's a good question.

I was reading a lot, and when you are using a lot of wide angle perspective will be to streched out with 17 mm.

The 70-200 should be verry sharp and fast.

And when you are to close to a car you can see your self in it, when you are not that close with the 70 mm it's harder to find your self back in the car.

Well these are some points.

Looking a lot on youtube as well, some profesionals use the 70-200 as well at these kind of shoots.

So there must be a good reason they do, I guess?

Here's my battery of lenses.

16-35 f/2.8L

35 f/1.4L

50 f/1.4

24-70 f/2.8L

70 - 200 f/2.8 IS

85 f/1.2

100 f/2.8 Macro

200 f/2 IS

400 f/2.8 IS

For fashion and editorials, I use primes since they're sharper and faster.  35, 50, 85 and 200.

When shooting sports and breaking news, it's the 16-35, 70-200, 400.

If I was starting out, this is what I would buy.

1x used 5D mki.  The mkii are still too new and is expensive in the used market.

1x 28 f/1.8

1x 50 f/1.8 or 50 f/1.4 if you have the additional cash.

1x 85 f/1.8

You can get all this for the price of a 70-200 f/2.8 II IS L.

Tnx for your info.

I didn't had the plan for an IS version that one is way to expensive for me.

But your option for some fixed lenses makes the choice even harder :-)

The one says Left the other one says Rigt story :-)

But I keep on reading and looking around.

It's a lot of money so I don't whant to make a choice to fast.

I use my D3 with a 14-24 2.8 wide angle ,  24-70 2.8 for most stuff ...  but a 70-200 2.8 is a good choice to have... great compression for  beauty shots at 200mm.  24-70 is just right for car shows for me ....
Always on my D2x is a Sigma 35mm 1.4, I do swap out to an 85mm for specific shots. I like prime lenses, more exciting for me to walk near/far to frame a shot. With the 35mm what I see with my eyes is what gets framed from about the same distance, I love it that way. For fun, Diana lenses and a few vintage cheap ass beat up lenses that I love.
