Hello everyone, I just wanted to take this time to share a bit about an awesome decade that most of us may look over. It was a great decade better known as the 'Swinging Sixties'. You'll be surprised to find out it's cultural effect on the world of fashion today and how easy it was to be a promiscuous little thang. Great blog! I live in Liverpool and basically, I don't think they have moved on since the 1960s, probably thanks to The Beatles aha! The Liverpudlian fashion is highly influenced by the Swinging Sixties with a lot of women still modelling the beehive hairstyle and big eyelashes, teamed with a miniskirt and box-cut jacket, usually faux fur.

Just as popular fashion in the 50's was an imitation and a co-opting of Dior and Balenciaga, popular fashion in the 60's was the imitation of these designers.

Yves Saint Laurent.

Pictured above is YSL's famous "Mondrian Dress" which I would argue defined 60's fashion, much as Dior's "Bar Suit" defined 50's fashion.

Mary Quant at best merely co-opted these designs and made them more available to the mass market, just like H&M or Forever 21 today.

In fact she was sort of a one trick pony because after "Mod" was no longer popular, she very much disappeared.

In that big fashion house in the sky, Mary Quant will have some big time 'splaining to do. She holds not a small amount of responsibility for Balenciaga leaving his career as the world's most talented designer. When he left, he did so because he said that couture was dead. After the great comeback of the European fashion houses in 1947, he was dismayed to find that mass marketed clothing and clothing designed from the street up took over fashion, leaving designers to run behind street wear to copy it, rather than to lead the way.

Mary Quant was on the forefront of this movement and said it herself in a flattering light in her autobiography, "Snobbery has gone out of fashion, and in our shops you will find duchesses jostling with typists to buy the same dress." What she calls snobbery could also be referred to as the ability to pay an artist/craftsman a reasonable amount for a work of art.

So, fashion is rarely art now. It is an expression, but it is disposable. We don't treat it with the same respect because it is undeserving of it. Designers now copy what is found on the street and follow rather than lead.

He was almost right. Couture died when Balenciaga retired.
