Alright my "dream" is to open a small studio with focus on pinup. I know right now i have VERY little experience in the whole studio sector of pictures, but i have a passion to do this. Also i would like to sell retail things in there as well supporting some of the other business's (clothes, shoes, etc)
Do you think this is dumb? Do you think this is acheivable? Do you have any suggestions on where i should go or how i should go to get to where i can do this?
Thanks,
Goldie
PS maybe a good section could be "The Business" of pinup. Just a thought.
I really can't help you on the "how" part of your question, but what I can say is that your dream is by no means dumb, and yes it is very achievable. I think your idea is wonderful, and I wish you luck in your endeavor. I wish i had the time and the money to do the same thing here! xoxo
That's a great idea and totally achievable. You can start out maybe renting studio space from an existing studio. Maybe Craigslist in your area may have some listings (under the community section click on the artists link). I know that some photographers sublease their spaces and some rent by the hour/day.
no dream is dumb - think about ways you can start small from home. Gather information about what you need in order to grow ie/equiptment, space, props - where to get it, how much it will cost, which vendors to work with etc. One friend started their photog biz without a studio - they only did outside shoots in the am or the pm - in no time their bizness grew and a year later she had to open her own storefront. 2 lightboxes and a blank wall or one you can drape at home is all you need to start. You can have an online shop with your vintage wares and sell at local street fairs as you ease into making your dream a reality!
I think it's a brilliant idea. Here in Kansas City, we have Retro Vixen, which is a total Pin Up go-to store. They have everything! They carry clothing and accessories made by local designers as well. They haven't been open too terribly long, only a few months or so, but I think it's safe to say they're quite successful. In the back of the shop, is the main studio where Vixen Pin-Up Photography does all of their photoshoot magic.
They have a Facebook page, if you're on there, so you can check out all of what they have going on. =0] Click
No, not dumb at all. I wish you luck and success. A retail shop will definitely bring foot traffic into the studio and generate interest. As an option you may want to look into renting space from an existing business, photography studio, hair salon, boutique or something of the like to get off the ground. Promote, Promote, Promote! Car shows, hair salons, gigs. Go for it - passion and determination can take you as far as you want to go.
