Roxy's Tiki Dining Room: A Journey

As many of you know from this post, http://www.pinuplifestyle.com/forum/topics/tiki-dining-room, I'm re-doing my dining room Tiki style. I figured now that the project is underway, I'd move this over to the DIY forum. So one more time, here are the before pix of my dining room.

Note the dirty white walls coupled with ugly purple trim. And although you can't see it well, 20 year old nasty brown carpet. The 1980's style gold "chandelier" was always a nice touch, and the big empty walls fun to look at.

The best part of the room is the furniture, 1930's vintage and built by my great grandpa.

So here we go... it's Tiki time!!

Project #1, the walls!

When we started this project the walls were white with purple trim. I decided to go with a bamboo color on the walls, and dark brown trim. This is what I ended up with:

It's poop colored!!! There was no better way to describe it, baby poop colored walls, and grown up poop colored trim. NOT OK!!!

So we headed back to Home Depot to re-think the paint. I choose a sand color this time for the walls and mixed a med brown from the paint I already had. This is the final result:

YAY, the poop is gone!

For the china cabinet I decided to go with a teal color to brighten up the room a bit:

(it's not quite done yet, I ran out of tape on the bottom cupboards)

My last idea was to do an accent wall. I wanted something that was very tiki themed, so I went back to the bamboo idea, but this time we decided on a wall treatment. It came out really well, and once the furniture and decor is up, I think it'll look really good!

So there we go, walls are done! Time for step 2, the lighting.

I didn't know that you were doing it Tiki style! Kurt and I were thinking Hawaii themed for our dining room as well! (a tribute to our time living on Oahu...and our 2 kids that were born there) I'll have to snag some inspiration from you!

Yo that looks sick! When you say "wall treatment" are you saying thats wallpaper? If so GREAT work keeping things lined up, I love it!

Well... kinda. I went to party city and got some cheap-o luau decorations. It's called Scene Setters, and it's a vinyl/plastic wall hanging. It looks terrible in the package!! LOL. But on the wall, it looks amazing! Everyone was really surprised. I would have never bought it from seeing it in the package, but TC and I saw it on the wall in the store and it looked amazing. It's was about $20, and comes in a 50x4 ft roll.

Project #2, The Lighting

The old ugly gold "chandelier" had to go! And since it gets really hot in that room during the summer when we're cooking, I decided that we needed a ceiling fan. I wanted one with the "leaves" for blades, but I came across two problems. One, those are really big fans! And it's not a small room, but it's not huge. And two, they are really expensive! So after doing a bit of shopping, and creative thinking, I bought this one:

Not bad for $21, but not very Tiki is it? My plan was to paint it brown, and maybe draw Tiki heads on the blades. But then, when we were thrift store shopping, we came across these:

There were 5 of them, for $3 each! So I scooped them up, took them home, and grabbed some spray paint!

After a few coats of green, and a light coat of brown (for depth), not to mention some brown spray paint and stone texture spray paint for the base, this is what I made!

It's not quite done yet, I still have to get up there and paint that other part of the base, and I want to find some little Tikis to replace the white pulls on the chains. But it's a HUGE improvement from that ugly light!!!!
