Why do photographers do this?

I've noticed here on PL that a lot of photographers post in the Casting Call section when they are booking shoots, but they are not casting calls at all but trolling for girls to pay them to shoot. I always thought a casting call was looking for a girl to shoot and either she would be paid or compensated in some other way, not the other way around.
Shouldn't there be another forum for this? That way, when a photographer, or business has a real casting call it won't get lost in the enormous amount of posts from photographers wanting to drum up business. (Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with looking for paid work, it just seems like the wrong forum for it)

Definitely need a photographer section where they can post with their non TF shoots, and specials with their rates.

Don't you think that would work AGAINST non TFP photographers? The modeling industry is plagued by the thought that you shouldn't pay for a photo shoot. Which of course isn't realistic. I don't see people willingly looking in a section thats only "pay for" sessions when there is a section dedicated to completely free shoots/opportunities.

There is logic behind modeling sites simply considering them all "Casting Calls". A person or business seeking talent is by definition a "Casting Call". Regardless of the terms to sign on to the opportunity (paid to model, paid to photographer, TFP). What I can envision doing is tagging TFP shoots in the title to facilitate people selectively choosing which threads to click on. It's a scalable solution that won't impact exposure to the amazing opportunities that get posted for both models and photographers. Remember that there are a growing number of models also posting in there seeking photographers in the areas they are traveling.

I agree w/ Edson. I think tagging TFP shoot threads may help. But could we have a separate area in Casting Calls just for Photographers?

Yes, they should be separate This is why I didn't post my travel notice on the casting call last time originally. I think a Travel Notice or Availability section would be nice.

I agree with this, you said it better than I did earlier but I think tagging them as TFP would work better.

I too gave up on casting calls from other sites. I think the categories (TFP and paid) need to be separated or have a darn good search interface.

Most people don't read them anyway (a new trend.. send out a billion "I'm interested" and maybe one, even if it is asking for someone 3' taller than you might just buckle and say yes.)

Regardless.. Definitely would be more interested to cruise a paid only or trade only forum vs it being all mingled together.

I agree, this has been bothering me for months -props for speaking up and saying something! Whatever happened to the good old fashioned "go sees" when models can line up to meet potential employers and be interviewed? I see the same models over and over again and get the impression no one looks for "fresh faces" anymore unless they're paying- which is fine- (but I had a pro offer me a shoot and I agreed to pay and that person flaked on me- so I no longer look at those casting calls either!) I get it- photographers have their "muses", but I'm sure there are other opportunities out there- like online catalog work or something. Maybe I should post a simmilar "casting call": "Model seeks Photographer, $50 gets you ME, hair and make up done, 3-4 looks, in my lovingly restored '59 home with real period props, free snacks and beer included. Need 3-4 photographers!" Think I'll get some business???

I think it would be perfectly reasonable to separate the two.
