Tiki Dining room

So I'm getting ready to re-do my dining room, and I have a pretty good tiki collection in boxes, so I figured.... Tiki Dining room! However, I'm running into designers block. I have the decoration stuff, and the furniture in there is a med wood color (it's vintage 1930, hand built by my great grandpa, so it has to stay), but I'm not sure about the wall color or floor. Right now it's white walls with purple trim, and icky brown carpet. One whole wall is a sliding glass door looking into a "extra" room (not sure what were doing with it yet). There is also a very 1980's "chandelier". Any ideas would be great! Thanks so much!

Tan walls (maybe like a yellowish tan), celing fan maybe? The kind with the "leaves" on it would be a cool light fixture. Or you could take the one and decorate off of it.

Hard wood floors maybe???? I am not good with floors either....

You should do a peachy color on the walls or a teal. The wood/design of the furniture I think will go nicely with your decor.

Anything tiki themed I've ever seen, has a lot of bamboo stalks incorporated in the decor. I'm sure you could work that in easily. Maybe a bamboo plant, or even bamboo curtains for your ginormous glass sliding door. Ooh, or place mats for the table!
I like Goldie's idea with the ceiling fan. That would go perfectly. If a fan wouldn't work, you could always utilize bamboo usage with a chandelier made of bamboo as well. I saw some neat ones looking through Google.

I have this wall covering by scene setters, it's kinda like wall paper, and looks pretty good if you don't get REAL close. So i'm thinking of doing that on one wall, but I don't wanna do every wall, I think it might be too much.

Thoughts on what the other walls should be with this?

I agree with Tessa tiki dining areas make me think of bamboo! I agree with Goldie as well, hard wood floors. I have seen bamboo flooring thats really nice ( I will be using it it on our back porch, we are doing a tiki/hawaii thing back there )

IMO, and I don't want to be a negative nancy, with that beautiful deco dining room set, you should keep your dining room deco! Maybe find some cool, retro pink and black flocked wall paper, or paint the walls a dark red or something. Have a collection of silhouettes hanging on the wall. You can pick up silhouettes pictures at flea markets, antique stores and online for 5-20 bucks each, depending on the size and different sizes would be cool. Maybe some abstract looking art.

If you are determined to go tiki, paint the walls aqua, you can purchase rolls of real bamboo to put on your walls, maybe cut the stalks different lengths. The ceiling fan is a must, I have one too. Look for painting by Turner for the walls, also hit up Alameda Antiques by the Bay for a shadow box to hang on the wall to display your tiki goodies. Do the chairs have seat cushions? Recover them in Hawaiian bark cloth.

I like the teal idea or like a sea foamy green with the wood would go nicely and make the ceiling fan pop in the room. i would say wood floors or a pretty laminate. always is nice to not have to scrub carpet when someone spills food on the floor you can just wipe it up easy breezy.

I definitely agree with painting the walls a teal or aqua color. As far as the sliding glass door goes, they have bamboo room dividers! That might be a nice touch. Floating shelves might be sweet too to house yout tiki goods!

Kim, I thought about art deco because of the furniture, but my mom vetoed it. She thinks it's too "artsy". LOL My grandparents used to have a tiki bar in their back yard, so when I mentioned tiki both them and my mom get really excited, and stared telling old stories. That pretty much sold me! Happy family is the best pay off for all the work, and my grandpa is super looking forward to it! But I love the idea, and when we're ready to change again, I might go that rout. Thanks!!

Paint them sand-coloured, then mottle golden brown over them to create a texture. Put some plants around as well, will add to the beachy tiki feel. I like to hang paintings and photos, maybe grab some cheap canvases and whip up some hula girl paintings... if you're not crash hot with a paintbrush no matter, once there's a couple in a huge crowded tiki room they won't feature so obviously and will look great. Otherwise just buys some frames that match the colour theme and print out some old Vargas paintings or something.

Another thing I swear by for my house is fake flowers... go to a bargain store and get yourself some and use them to add to the colour and busyness of the room. The table and chairs are great, maybe lose the tablecloth and whip up an artsy little centrepiece... maybe a platter with sand in it, some hibiscus flowers and candles maybe.... scatter them lengthways on the table?

I'm going to stop before I go too far, let me know if this is helpful and I'll purge some more interior decorator tips for you!
