Being on the other side of the lens, I have not had many positive experiences with MM. I've had several models who contacted me through the site flake on me at the last minute. Left a bad taste in my mouth, so much so that I deleted my account.
However, for a model it is an excellent way to expose yourself to countless talented photogs, MUAs, etc. Just remember to have a little common courtesy when arranging a shoot with someone (sorry if that sounded like a lecture).
Like anything else, trust your gut instincts when it comes to booking through MM when you don't know the person. As a model, if I get any feeling of creepiness or unprofessionalism, I lose interest, and fortunately for me, my escort is my hairstylist AND boyfriend. MM is crawling with amateur creeps waiting to take advantage of girls.
The photographers I've worked with I knew personally until I moved out here to LA, so getting references from models and checking out credits is a big deal.
I feel MM has a big issue with unprofessional people and all-around trashiness (if anyone's familiar with the @modelmayhemwtf twitter, or checked out any of the contests you see what I mean)
Never be scared to be picky about who you work with. It's worth it to have a portfolio that you're PROUD of, not something you just got for free.
Model Mayhem is a lovely site if you approach with caution. Thankfully Xavier is my Escort. lol. if it wasn't for MM I wouldn't have heard about PL!!!
and for the record, I've booked zero shoots from PL. all of my shoots have been from MM.
