From my limited experience and via tutorial viewing, it seems that pinup styles are pretty hard on the hair. From heat styling to backcombing... well, you get the picture.

I've tried olive oil, coconut oil, that henna and placenta stuff, ojon and numererous salon brands. The ends of my hair are still pretty fine and frizzed out. Ugh!

How do you lovely ladies keep your locks healthy through it all? I'm still learning to care for newly curly hair. My hair is very fine and slightly thin. Any ideas?

I hope someone does have some ideas because you just described my hair to a T. I also have tried everything. My hair is naturally curly and a giant frizz bomb.
My hair started to get very frizzy and dry from all the styling a few months back. It does take a toll. First off when I am staying home I dont put any product in my hair I don't even brush or blow dry it. I just put it in a bun. The other thing I use that has helped my hair tremendously is using a special cleansing solution. I don't use soapy shampoos in my hair. I use Wen by Chaz Dean. In 3 weeks time my hair was shiny and laying flat instead of having frizz. It is expensive to use especially if you have long hair but it really works. I have used all the oils and ojon and nothing worked like this did. ( it also maintains color great too) I cn tell the difference immediately when I switch back to regular shampoo and conditioner. You should give it a try but you have to stick with it for 3 weeks to start seeing the differece. =)
XOXO, Aubrey

I opt to do as little heat styling as possible, and instead do cold sets. I don't know if it is like this for everyone, but for my hair, a cold set can last a good two to three days with creative styling, so I'm not doing a new set every day. I do have a bonnet dryer attachment for my blow dryer if I absolutely HAVE to get my hair dry RIGHT NOW, but I try to use it as infrequently as possible and just let my hair air dry instead. I also try to keep any sort of product containing alcohol away from my hair and I don't color my hair.
I wash my hair only every 3 or 4 days and use "Its A 10" hair masque and leave in conditioner, it helps restore moisture and elasticity for me. I also love Redken's shampoo for color treated hair, my hair feels like I conditioned it -after just shampooing!!! And when I color, I stick to using a level 10 developer, I'd rather let my color fade a little then assault my scalp and dry out my ends.

I also brush my hair out complety before I wash it to avoid any tangles (esp, from teasing)getting worse with water- its harder to comb out tangled wet hair then tangled dry hair, your hair is weaker when wet and more likely to break. (Elastic band holders for pony tails, can cause breakage too if you use them too much, especially sleeping in one!)

My ends are in bad shape currently from lightening my hair (again) but its nothing a trim wouldn't fix. I avoid blow drying, or let my hair dry 70% before impatiently blow drying it on low- or cool. When I use the curling iron I use a thermal serum to protect it and the lowest acceptable setting on my iron that will curl my hair. That high setting is not for gals with fine thin hair!
the secret is this..

are you ready?...

don't tell k?

get regular haircuts!! it doesn't have to be 4 inches off. just a little trim, 5-8 weeks. cut those frazzeled ends off otherwise they will just keep splitting up the hair shaft!

Wen is wonderful! Sally Beauty Supply actually sells something that is a comparative product. it's called "Hair One" it's a sulfate free cleanser conditioner, and it's a fraction of the price!!

try avoiding heat! do "wet sets" if you want your hair curly. foam rollers are great.

I personally only wash my hair once a week, and I deep condition it with JOICO's K-Pak Treatment Twice a week...

oils and things like that only sit on top of the hair shaft, they don't penetrate into the hair. plus oil attracts dirt, and dirty hair is not happy hair..

hope that helped.
:)
Aubrey, I've tried Wen and love it but I'm a near daily washer so the price is just too high. I'm going to try the Sally's knockoff soon to see if that helps any. I've also been conditioning only except for once weekly after burlesque class when I need to sandblast the hairspray out of my hair!

atomik_momma- how do you cold set? pincurls? what do you use? Unfortunately, I have to color because I'm starting to go grey. :P

sara s- thanks for the heat setting tip. Do you find your hair sets just as well with a lower setting?

Nikki s- glad to hear that sally's wen works for you! which variety do you use? I used foam rollers in high school and wound up with a terrible kinky mess the next morning- how do you do it so it looks pretty?
Hey Cherry,

I am going to San Francisco this weekend, so I hope to blast a ton of tutorials. I will do one on a wet set with foam rollers! :-)

My hair is naturally extremely curly. To keep it soft and smooth, I refuse to shampoo it unless absolutely necessary. When I shower, the first thing I do is wet my hair and lather up a ton of conditioner into it, then let it set. Rinsing it all out is the last thing I do before hopping out of the tub. As far as products go, I'm with Sara on the "It's a 10" leave-in conditioner. It keeps my hair super soft even if I blow dry it or go on to straighten it.
usually i go the sponge roller route. i wait until my hair is completely dry and then i spritz each section with water individually as i roll. i just get it slightly damp. i also try to use the medium sized and larger sized rollers and not roll all the way to the scalp unless i just really want a Shirley Temple type of look.

i agree, the Wen stuff is amazing. i used to have pitch black hair and i am naturally a sandy blond, and my hair grows fast, so i had to constantly dye it and dye it, and it really took a beating, i used that stuff just a handful of times and my hair was like virgin hair again. i will never dye my hair again (so i say), lol. as i was saying, that stuff works wonders.
