I personally use both! I don't splurge too much on a basic black pencil, But I do shell out a few bucks on Rimmel's Glam 'Eyes, I love how skinny the brush is, captures the perfect cat eye. What are your thoughts?

Well I can only use vegan brands, Barry M is ok for pencils and glitter, Urban Decay is great and Im not sure what I did before 'B'. I agree that the skinny brush is a must, the non-hairy kind for clean line. But I also love black mineral powder eyeliner (no brand name, just make sure it has no talc in it) with a damp brush....it can be messy but it gives a really sexy look thats somewhere between defined and smoky.
personally I use liquid But I found this stuff called eyestudio from maybelline its a gel it actually smears a bit but after that its perfect!
Gel liner is the go-to type of eyeliner for models and MUAHS looking for a great defined line! I haven't found one that has really captured my heart though... I find them a bit hard to use for the every day, but then I only have tried cheapo ones since I'm a cheapskate! I prefer liquid, and recently I've been using Almay's.
I use both; pencil on my waterlines and liquid on my top lashes. I tried to use a gel liner but I found the pigment wasn't strong enough for the look I wanted.
For a low-key look, I use Armani's Smooth Silk Eye Pencil in a charcoal shade. It goes on easily and smudges well if that's the look you are going for.

I can't do liquid liner to save my life. But I've recently fallen IN LOVE with MAC's Fluidline. Goes on like a dream, is easy to build coverage however you desire and stays put. I *love* it!
MAC Fluidline as a base, then the gel liner in black works amazing! It doesn't smudge or anything. Pretty expensive though.
I just bought maybelline and it works great, dont really use pencil only because it goes away due to greasy eyelids but i did buy MAC eye primer so i have not tried it yet.

love liquid. its all I use. Maybelline!
I can't waterline b/c I tear up something fierce and it ruins the whole look.

Last night I did a dark blue smokey eye and used a fairly thick line of dark blue shadow applied with a thin liner brush then went over it with a thin layer of black gel liner; omg, the resulting look really popped. It's something I want to play with a bit more because I love the versatility of the gel liner.
I used liquid...and was a disaster, I should try with pencil
I do the same thing! Benefit babecake on top and urban decay 24/7 in zero on the bottom

I've been a fan of Bobbi Brown's Gel Liner for ever, super smooth, stays on, doesn't crack or smudge unless you want it to. ;)
