abandoning MySpace

I've noticed a lot of people, especially pinups and photographers, dumping myspace

now I don't use mine a lot true but that's where I get a lot of my music from as well as pinups and other ideas

so far I've held my facebook for family and friends


what's the general feel around here?
are most people just killing their myspace accounts and sticking with facebook and model mayhem?

I think Myspace is done! I have mine still but I have friends on there that I have known since I was in middle school! I check it about once every few weeks.

Facebook has taken over Myspace!

In total, I have 47 social networking sites (not including my site or any NING sites) that I am a member of and most of them I signed up for just to see what it was all about after hearing about it from a friend or an ad that i saw.

I started my myspace profile back in 2006 for roller derby. I then added an additional profile for my burlesque persona. I haven't checked either since February and June 2009, respectively. I got sick of all the spam. I am seriously contemplating deleting my accounts, but at the same time, I've acquired so many folks on my network that I second guess my decision. Right now I'm a casual burlesque performer because I have to drive 4.5 hours one way to perform with my old troupe. I'm considering, especially when I get a more gas-efficient vehicle (I drive a V8 Land Rover Discovery that only takes premium...yowza!) becoming a more serious performer and going back down to Tucson more often. If I do start to step up my burlesque, I'll probably want to get back on myspace to network. Then again, I don't know. I know many that have deleted their myspace and gone in other directions.

I was on myspace on my work computer listening to music and I ended up with a trojan virus on it...it came through a myspace popup ad! I'm just not sure I want to deal with it anymore...perhaps I'll delete one and keep the other. It can't hurt to have it out there, I guess...

There are a few gals in my troupe that have facebook burlesque profiles...at one point I was on so many networks I lost track!!!

It's true that I use Facebook exclusively for people I've actually met in person at some point in time. I never accept friend requests from strangers, and rarely even "fan" things there. Although I treated MySpace the same way, I know a lot of people used it for networking as well. I now only occasionally pop in to MySpace to get the latest updates from the famous folks I wanted to follow (random people like Muse, Kat von D, and Michael Buble that I wanted to keep updated on for tours, etc), and even a lot of them never update using MySpace any more.

I think Twitter has become more of a replacement for MySpace on terms of people following celebs, artists, musicians, etc. (even though I've never been able to get into Twitter myself, I signed up and have logged in maybe 3 times since then), where Facebook has replaced MySpace in terms of keeping in touch with people you know. I'm with Edson in that smaller, more focused networking sites (PL, MM, etc etc) have been the replacement of choice for the networking aspect of MySpace. I feel like it's coming to the point that anyone WORTH networking with, won't be on MySpace... it's a little outdated, swarming with noobs wannabes and posers, and overall just gives this air of being a bit juvenile. Too many glitter graphics for my taste, lol! Then again, I haven't really EXPLORED MySpace in a while. I don't really know all the ins and outs, which I am sure are getting expanded and updated all the time to try and compete with all these other sites. So maybe there's something I am missing, and it seems to still be useful for a lot of people, so whatever works!

I personally am thinking of deleting my MySpace account for the simple fact that my page is SO outdated (my pictures there are ancient, old info, etc) and it would take so much work to get everything up to date. Anyone who finds me on there now will have a totally different impression of me. So take note that the profiles you find on MySpace might be misleading, or that you are missing a large chunk of people who've moved on to other sites.

Also, Edson, thank you so much for that link! I signed up, and this Threadsy thing is looking way cool! I might actually use my Twitter account now that everything's all together!

I've been a member of Myspace since 2003 when it launched. It started off with a great idea, and it just went "kablooey" from there. It was a great marketing tool at first, but now there are all kinds of spammers and creepers on there. I much rather promote myself using Guerrilla Marketing than to "hope" I'm found on Myspace. I work old fashioned, business cards, stickers, flyers, even considering a radio spot sometime in the near future.

If you think that your "friends" on MySpace are actually going to "vote" for you for some pinup contest, you're out of your mind. Half the people that randomly friend folks on myspace are just trying to get their friend count higher. Because they're sad little people that need perfect strangers to think that they're awesome and popular. They don't add you to their "update stream" they don't care what you do, or how they can help you do it. The only people voting for anything are the people that actually follow your work, your friends, and your family.

The way to market yourself is simple. Word of mouth, word of mouth, word of mouth! I can't stress that enough! Get out there in the REAL WORLD and make yourself known! You don't need Myspace to do that. I use Facebook to keep in contact with Family, Friends and current Co-Workers. I use Twitter to update everything (my Facebook, PL and Twitter status). I don't go anywhere NEAR MM, why would I? I have PL! I also use twitter and facebook for my business accounts. It's nice to use Threadsy to pull ALL of them together in one convenient spot! (thanks for the Threadsy plug Edson! more people need to be on there)

Bottom line, is that people should use the internet as a tool for social networking, not exclusively as their social life. Get outside, get some fresh air, go have a beer with your friends....you know...the flesh and blood ones, that aren't computer code. ;)

personally I'll be keeping my MySpace and using it much like I have in the past
I'm mostly pinups, punk rock and metal

Facebook is not likely to lift that limit, their intent isn't the type of networking that myspace was built for. Their solution to that limit was creating "Pages" that have unlimited number of friends. That will make profile #3 for ya on facebook ;)

I've noticed that their are more and more pinups going to facebook and if their like me,,,I have two facebook accounts... One for exclusive family. Then one for my pinup modeling and friends. The only problem is the 5,000 friends limit I'm sure the Facebook will lift this in the future. So for me it's here and Facebook from now on.

I just can't see me networking like that on facebook
I just it almost exclusively for people I know IRL and started deleting a lot of the "fan pages" I signed up for

I'll keep a couple but I don't want to use it for my pinup stuff
