Hair Rollers Help!?

So, I hear rollers for your hair are a nice way to make your locks nice and curly and/or wavy. I was looking at some today, but didn't know whether I should use hot rollers, or just have my hair wrap around plain rollers. I'm afraid the hot rollers would fry my hair. I have thick, wavy hair if that helps any.

I know how to work the hot rollers if it is a right choice, but don't exactly know what to do about the other kind. Do I roll them up when my hair's dry? Damp? Not exactly sure what to do, and not exactly sure what kind to get. So, what do you recommend? Do you use a certain brand, and how do you curl your hair into those gorgeous pin-up styles!? THANK YOU!!

Use caruso steam rollers. It's what all the pageant girls are using to get that Miss Universe hair, and I've used them on shorter hair to pull off a fabulous pin-up look. :-D

i sold all my caruso sets (i had three......) to raise money for my big, trans-continental move. now i wish id kept a set. v.v ill have to tell my aunt (who got me addicted to them in the first place) that she was right. selling them was a mistake. :'(

I've decided I want another set of remington tight rollers and there are a ton of them, they just sell for more than twice what the set I bought 12 years ago cost!

I tend to prefer pin curls...don't need to buy rollers for that just pin curl clips or bobby pins and you can make them as big or little as you need. I use setting lotion or mousse to set the pin curls. Lotta Body is a great setting lotion that comes in a liquid form. Most mousse setting lotions are great and smell wonderful to boot. If I have to use curlers, I prefer perm rods. Sponge rollers can create too tight a curl and hot rollers for me never hold real well even if I let them cool before removing...my hair is too thick and heavy.

There is also a male user on there that has videos that are scanned pages of vintage hair styling magazines that take you step by step through the process of making certain styles. Different types of hair react better with different techniques of course, and I have found that experimentation is the best. I used hot rollers when my hair was longer, but they are too heavy now that it's shorter. Velcro rollers are my new best friend. Whichever method you use, just pay special attention to the ends of the curls to avoid kinks and other weird stuff and make sure that hair has cooled completely before taking the curls down.

The caruso steam rollers never would hold my hair, it's too fine, I think. I don't know if those are the types they are talking about. The Remington small rollers are by far the best I've ever used and I've used about 4 or 5 different types, including stick rollers.

Always roll dry. These velvet rollers are safer for the hair. In my professional opinion, these are seriously the best and will hold a curl the longer than any curling iron. Sponge rollers will last the longest but are a bit tricky to use if you are not sure of the out come.

Hi there..

My roller preference is magnetic rollers. They are the plain looking plastic rollers that need to be clipped in order to stay in your hair. You roll your set when the hair is still very wet (also, add in a styling product, volumizing mousse is a GREAT thing here). They look nearly impossible but it's amazing how well the hair sticks to them when they are wet; hence the "magnetic" action. There are many different wrap patterns, so you will just have to find out what works best for you. They can be a little tricky to wrap yourself if you have shorter hair, so if you have a friend to help, that is ace. When you have your rollerset done, stick yourself under a dryer (I have a nice at home bonnet dryer) for about 30 minutes on hot heat (this depends on thickness and length of hair of course, but make sure it is nice and dry) and then come out from the dryer, spray liberally with hair spray, and allow the hair to cool.

The most important part is the brush out....use an Isinis brush when the curls are cooled and unwrapped and brush the everliving stink out of your hair. The more you brush, the better. Flip your head upside down and brush through it. Then, when you have it all fluffed out, start your backcombing. Set everything into place and hairspray some more. This set will last you if done properly.

If you're a "wash your hair every day" kinda gal, another great option is sponge rollers, assuming you get the correct diameter for your hair length. you wouldn't want to put small little 1.0" rollers into shoulder length hair. Not only would the hair not dry, but you would potentially look like an afro'd idiot when you unrolled yourself. They are comfy enough (in my opinion) to sleep in. Wrap a scarf around your rolled head and get to bed. Make sure the hair is just damp when rolling as the moisture will stay trapped in these puppies.

I love sponge rollers; they provide a great curl, come in different sizes and, best of all, you can sleep in them! They can be bought in most drug stores and have their own clip attached to them. As Honey said above, set them with damp hair (perhaps with a setting solution for a longer lasting curl) and then seperate them with your fingers, brush them out with a vented brush to create waves, and style with pins and combs after about 4 hours - maybe a little longer as your hair is thick - until they are completely dry. That's what's so good about sponge rollers; you can put them in after your shower at night, wrap your head in a scarf, go to bed and wake up the next day and a voila, the hair is dry and perfectly curled when unrolled!



Check out youtube for tutorials on different styles you can create with the rollers. She's been mentioned before, but this woman is pretty much the best on youtube for vintage/pin up/rockabilly hair styles.
