My grandma emailed me earlier today with this;

"The video is evidence of why none of us was overweight when I was in high school in the 50s.
. . . we loved this and would drive for miles to find a ballroom when
there were no school dances that week.  Kept this up through my 40s and
we couldn't find places to dance anymore in San Diego."

makes me happy to know that my family can relate to what my interests are now to when they were growing up :D

Damn,
now i need to find a good place to go to learn to swing!

There is proven evidence.....that with the advance of technology (computers, TV/video, and especially video games) that the average amount of overweight people has increased.

Also, the way food is made and processed has changed alot. More people farmed and lived off their land back then. If you look up vintage recipes, it's a totally different ball game.

Anyone ever wondering why so many vintage dresses are so tiny?

Give yourself a history lesson on the way people (and especially Americans) lived during the 20's through the early 60's.

Simpler times = a simpler way of living. WWII affected so much as well.

I am SO against video games. I hate them. I think they make people dead. That's just me.

I would rather go and find a swing dance class, run outside, go on a hike or whatever than buy a "Wii Fit"...........that's just me. Fresh air, activity, an interaction with other human beings is wayyyy underrated in this day and time.
Riot that video is KILLER ! Please upload it to our videos section! http://www.pinuplifestyle.com/video/video/newWithUploader

I was way healthier when i was clubbing almost nightly. Dancing is amazing body maintenance.
Uploading now!
I used to dance in HS, but have been out of the habit lately :( i miss it terribly!
with 3 kids, video games are a great way to gather round and hang out with each other, especially when it's -12 degrees outside, the kids are already sick, and they don't understand the board games that we already have. Either that, or we read to each other.

Finding a babysitter (for 10 bucks per hour...if not more), then finding a dance hall/class, then having to go through all the "beginner steps" when you already know how to dance...is all more of a hassle than fun.

don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with you. People need to get out more. I, myself, used to teach a bellydancing class for kids when I lived in San Diego. But, times have changed, women have careers and less time to focus on themselves. Values are different for children today than they were 50+ years ago. Not saying that it's right, but it's the way it is.

I would agree that a lot of people in the early 20's to the mid 40's lived off the land...or more specifically they bought local food. But the average person stopped growing their own food in the early 1900's due to the industrial revolution coming about. And the quintessential "50's abode" was a suburb with a little white picket fence....and a yard...not a farm....if they grew anything it was flowers and maybe some herbs. This was a time when farms and orchards were being demolished to make way for shopping centers and more homes/condos. Not to mention, a lot of the recipes back then...if my Nana's cook books circa 1940-1957 are correct...were disgustingly unhealthy. People were lucky they were forced to walk so much back then! So much butter and lard was used that it boggles the mind. (sorry...lengthy, I was a history major and tutor.)

I would just consider these things before shouting "video game zombies are making the world obese!!" from the rooftops.

Personally, I love the Wii fit, and my kids love challenging me to races on it. Anything that gets my kids engaged and excited is just fine in my book. When good weather comes back around, outdoors will be our playground again. But until then? I'll take my fireside, a good snuggle, and a game of table tennis on my Wii w/ my kids.

This kid's parents have the right idea! I saw him recently at a Big Sandy show dancing with all the ladies...
haha! He ROCKS! I'd have danced with him in a heartbeat!

Let me clarify Honey B. I do not have kids and I was not taking that into consideration.:

It's wayyyy too hard to include a disclaimer for everyone and anyone who might be offended by or disagree with opinions.

I also did state it was my opinion. I am speaking from the point of view of someone like myself without kids and who has the means to be active, and chooses to do so in place of things like video games.

I was not including moms with kids into my post. I do not know what it is like to be in that position so therefore I do not take it into consideration. On the other hand, it isn't fair for people with kids expect childless people to understand their position either.

I don't want to argue or be negative on PL. My words were taken wrong so I just wanted to clear that up!
Hopefully, I'll soon be taking some swing dance classes!! It was a bit hard to find them but I got 'em. I live in the country, where we have no movie theatres, just drive-in & we have antique/muscle car shows all the time! I love it! I miss the city, but i certainly do love it here. =]
Where do you live, doll? that sounds like fun, honestly! ahah
