Here's an updo I did on myself for a fashion show, which I plan on replicating for the Fashion Department holiday party (sorry if the pics are huge)

I divided my hair so that the back section curved forward a bit.
I ponytailed the back section close to the part so the holder could be hidden by the swirl.
I sectioned the longer layers behind my bangs and brushed it all forward, curled it, and clipped it aside.
I curled the ends of the rest of my hair.
I teased the ponytail and front section, lightly misted with aqua-net throughout, added the red clip-ins, and smoothed the surface.
Then, swept the hair in the direction I wanted to swirl, and brushed the ends into a smooth curl.
I situated the hair to hide the ponytail underneath, strategically creating a pin-curl in the back on the side, pinning securely and misting with aqua-net.
Then, I teased my bangs and did pretty much the same, sweeping it down and across and making a pin-curl on the side and spraying in place.

TIPS- Human hair clip-in colors withstand and respond to heat-styling, setting, and products best. :) You can also fine-tune the color with dye (like I did). If you're teasing hair, tease the clip-in lightly before adding. You can make little gaps in your own hair as you smooth it over to show the color as more than one streak, like in my bangs.
I use two ponytail holders to keep my hair secure, and my hair isn't thick or heavy, so use another if you have tons of hair.
For pin curls, short bobby pins can be more easily hidden. Sally Beauty Supply makes good ones. :)
