So, I hear rollers for your hair are a nice way to make your locks nice and curly and/or wavy. I was looking at some today, but didn't know whether I should use hot rollers, or just have my hair wrap around plain rollers. I'm afraid the hot rollers would fry my hair. I have thick, wavy hair if that helps any.

I know how to work the hot rollers if it is a right choice, but don't exactly know what to do about the other kind. Do I roll them up when my hair's dry? Damp? Not exactly sure what to do, and not exactly sure what kind to get. So, what do you recommend? Do you use a certain brand, and how do you curl your hair into those gorgeous pin-up styles!? THANK YOU!!

Hey there sweetie! Conair makes great hot rollers, you can always get them from Sally Beauty Supply.

If you wrap your hair wet (damp..is more accurate) then you can use plain rollers, no heat needed.

If you use hot rollers, put them in your hair when it's dry. Leave them in until they're cool (use a heat protective spray on your locks before you use hot rollers) then take them out and Ta-Da! use your fingers to separate the curls, or brush them out for waves! :)
I love sponge rollers; they provide a great curl, come in different sizes and, best of all, you can sleep in them! They can be bought in most drug stores and have their own clip attached to them. As Honey said above, set them with damp hair (perhaps with a setting solution for a longer lasting curl) and then seperate them with your fingers, brush them out with a vented brush to create waves, and style with pins and combs after about 4 hours - maybe a little longer as your hair is thick - until they are completely dry. That's what's so good about sponge rollers; you can put them in after your shower at night, wrap your head in a scarf, go to bed and wake up the next day and a voila, the hair is dry and perfectly curled when unrolled!

Check out youtube for tutorials on different styles you can create with the rollers. She's been mentioned before, but this woman is pretty much the best on youtube for vintage/pin up/rockabilly hair styles.

I hope that helped a little, but remember: practice makes perfect and don't be scared to experiment!
Where do you find the styling solution? I've looked for it before and couldn't find it.
Styling solution can be found @ Sally Beauty (Setting Lotion) or you can just use Gel! (light hold gel if you set at night and sleep in it!...or else it gets all crunchy)

Personally, I dislike hot rollers. I use perm rods on hair damp with mousse. Totally not keen on setting lotion, either! They dry relatively fast and provide a good, strong, uniform curl.
Perm rods are a fantastic for a wet set! Hot rollers are great if you're in a hurry, you just have to be sure to roll carefully, or you can get kinks and twists that are undesirable.

I do not like hot rollers that are held in place with clips- they leave funny creases in my hair. I only use the ones with the pins. And they have never fried my hair, but the curl only lasts if it has cooled completly, the weight of the hair will pull warm curls out. I don't like how heavy a head of hot rollers is so when I curl this way I remove them when they are warm, roll the curl back up and clip it in place with a pin curl clip and let them all cool completly, and they cool faster without the roller in there. I also used only the medium rollers from two different sets (since I needed that many to roll up my long, thick hair) the less hair in each roller- the better the curl.

Velcro rollers get tangled up in wet and damp hair so the hair has to dry completly before you take them out, and I'm not that patient.

Sponge rollers can leave creases in the hair, but you can smooth them out with a curling iron afterward and they are the most confortable to sleep on. Wet set curls last longer then heat styled curls.

I prefer to curl with a curling iron.
all true, but Curling irons really damage your hair when you use them too often. :) (just had to cut 3 inches off my hair...augh)

Plus, I just don't get the volume or mouldability (is that even a word? did I just make that up?) that I need for my styles when I use curling tongs.

For me, I like hot rollers. Sponge rollers are the ones that leave creases in my hair or make my hair curl way to big so I end up looking like a bad 70s disco roller girl.

I have a hot roller set that has 10 small curlers. I use claw clips I purchases separately from a beauty supply to secure the rollers in my hair to avoid creases. I bought my curler set from a beauty supply.

I used to have a roller set that had 24 small curlers only, but it broke and you can't find them retail anymore. I bought it about 12 years ago at a pharmacy. I think you can find them on ebay still, but the 24 roller kind goes on ebay for over $100 now.

A trick to keeping the curl in my hair is to set my hair in the morning with hot rollers, take the curlers out and wear it in a snood all day without brushing my hair. Before going out, I take the snood off, brush and style my hair and the curl stays well ALL NIGHT. Sometimes I use a little spray setting lotion made by redkin before I roll my hair to also help the curl stay.
