Good digital camera?

I need a new digital camera. The one I have is 4 years old and is the size of a small brick. I'm just looking for a point and shoot and not a pro digi, hence not posting this in the photographers forum. Anyway, I want something small that will fit in my purse and something that has good picture quality and battery life. Any suggestions? I was looking at the Canon Powershot, as I have heard great things about it. Let me know what you think.

I love my Casio (?!) Exilim. I didn't know Casio even made cameras, but it was very well reviewed on the Steve's DigiCam site, which is chock-full of everything you have ever actually WANTED to know about different digital cameras. There's a link along the left-hand side for The Best Cameras, if you want to skip all of the other reviews, and pare down your choices. Within that Best category, there are lists of 10 or so cameras in each of a bunch of categories like Pro, Entry-Level, Pocket, and Ultra-Compact. It's great!

You can get a bunch of different brands and models in the sub $300 range. Check out the camera stores, or the dreaded big box retailers. I have an Olympus Stylus that I love! It has tons of functions and a HUGE LCD screen on the back of it for viewing your shots. It's pretty stinkin cool. I got it for Christmas last year and have taken probably a few thousand pictures with it. It's nothing too fancy but it definitely makes for a great camera to play with. It's water proof up to ten-ish feet and it's really small, too. Fits in a pocket, small purse. It's MAYBE an inch thick. Love the sucker.
