How do we really feel about online voting contests? What SUCKS about them?

Update: This is an old thread I stated awhile ago so I'm not in the contest anymore. I see the thread is still kickin though, nice!

OK. So I'm currently in an online voting contest and it's one that I REALLY want to win. I won't shamelessly try to promote it this time though :0)
My thoughts these days are, how fair are they really? Doesn't it seem more like a "who you know" contest rather then judged off of your talent, looks, personality, photography, and what not? Plus, it's so impersonal with the internet running the game. And whatever happened to the old school Pin Up contests that are held in public with judges? Let's bring that back! Maybe start a City to City contest kind of Dr. Sketchy's style? Yeeeeah, now I'm thinking! Awww, s***, I'm onto something. You heard it here first!
(DC, Dee, we will talk about this later, lol)
Luckily, the one I'm in is just boiling down to the last 12 contestants and then it's fairly judged by real people face to face on stage. I'm just curious what the outside looking in perspective is. I know that it is an attempt to get the contest holders company promoted without actually having to network to hundreds at a time which I understand is hard. And I understand that is a give/take because the model gets more face time on their sites and promotion out of it too. Sometimes this goes round and around in my head because I feel like my friends are getting worn thin with voting requests and frankly I'm assuming, a bit annoyed with it. Let's hear it PL!

And s***, if you all respond that you love it Seanna will be holding an online "Seanna's Favorite Pin Ups Contest" in March. You heard that here first too. Snap! (no I'm not drunk, I'm just extremely hyper right now.)

Maybe sometimes the big vote for me campaigns esp via messages have the opposite effect and compel people to go for the under dog without the voting machine.

I voted on the contest you're in, because you really have the look. Good Luck!
Oh thanks Vivien! I need to come up with a little present I can give everyone who voted for me when this is all said and done!

I see where you are coming from, Kristy. The gals entering these contests are taking a personal risk by putting themselves "out there". So by that alone they get my respect!

In the end, egos are bruised and many will question why they didn't win or at least place. The danger lies in people getting discouraged and not participating in contests again because they felt cheated by the popularity machine driving the votes.

The contests being judged this way may be hurting our community and industry because girls who are the absolute BEST will not to rise to the top and WE will simply miss out. For all we know, we could be alienating the next Bernie Dexter!

No offense to any of the lovely ladies who won by popularity in the past, but a company doesn't search for a pinup model who has the most friends. We want the girl with the look that commands attention or has that special "something" people can deeply connect with.

For me personally, I would never do them cause I know I'd be dissappointed. My ego is very fragile and little stuff like that does bother me.

I think, for most of these type things, it is all about how many friends you have. I have a very humble, small circle of friends. In a way I guess it isn't fair for those who don't have a large circle of friends. Then again, if you are a person like me, you have a choice not to enter contests. So better off just staying away from them until you expand your social circle, rather then entering, getting dissappointed and griping about it later.

At the same time, if a girl has the means to enter these contests and have a good chance of winning, go for it. I am the last to hate on anyone.
Once again thank you! Well said.

bump...

Lets hear from you ladies what SUCKS about contests, registering to vote, multiple votes/day, etc...
I will not vote if i have to join, friend, or register. Those are my deal breakers... unless I really like you, then maybe.
I sometimes run into the dillemma if I read on the forum here or somewhere else, someone asking for votes, and I go to the competition fully intending to vote for this person, but notice another girl's photos whose style I like more.
NOW WHAT? Haha
Roxy you hit the nail on the head! Ha ha!

I AGREE HONEY , IM CURRENTLY IN A COMPETITION , SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR VERY STRANGE ! I DONT TRUST IT EITHER, ITS NOT FAIR IN ANY WAY ! THEY DONT GET TO MEET YOU OR KNOW U , THEY SHOULD HAVE A BIGGER PAGE ONLINE WITH VIDEOS AND STUFF! I COULDNT EVEN PICK MY PICTURE OR WRITE MY BLOG ! THEY WROTE SOMETHING RATHER RANDOM ! X
Lol I wish a picture WOULD speak for itself. The contest I am in has random "models" with bad photos and everything. I'm experienced and used a photo taken from the best photographer in my area. Does it matter?? Nope..! The top five still includes photos of people I would pass by on any model site. So, i got smart and decd. that the old fashioned way was NOT going to work. I wanted to enter this contest for the prize package but now its more like a mission...lol I am on a mission to prove that I can be a social networking guru too. I dont have many close friends but I am on several sites on the WWW, so why not take advantage of it. You can ignore the emails or post but for everyone that does this...a half of someone might actually vote.

Holding in person contest would be what I would prefer as well. In order to get to this level, sometimes you have to lower yourself to doing the "vote for me" stuff...i TOTALLY have! Also, voting in person has a name...its called Pageants!... When I saw a vote for me request for an online pinup pageant I thought that was a wonderful twist on things. I would LOVE to be in a pinup pageant! A LIVE one! I grew up doing beauty pageants so that is sooo my cup of tea! When you guys go National...i will be there with my red lipstick and heels! Call me...

With that said..i cant leave without asking for your vote..lol So vote for Shay to enter The House of Savid here. It takes like 3 seconds max and no signing up for anything. When I first entered it, we were NOT told we would have to get votes over the net..I think I would have passed. But not that I am in it and soooo close..... Here you go...Vote for Shay all the Way.....http://savidd.weebly.com/voting.html

They are definitely "popularity" contests and in no way reflect on the talent or looks of the models entered. Also, if I ever had a contest to find models for my company, I certainly would pick the models I liked myself. I know what looks good and I want to show my garments in the best possible light.
Keep the feedback coming folks...

What if PL had a photo contest...no registration, no accounts needed, 1 vote per day, totally anonymous, so you'd really vote for the photo you felt was the most amazing and noone would know...

Oh, and completely automated, calculated by computers including the winner announcements.
