Episode 2: Adventure on the river.
A friend of ours from Switzerland was back for a visit with his girlfriend, and several of us decided to go kayaking together before they had to leave. There were about eight of us total ranging from old friends to new acquaintances. We started off the day with Sunday brunch at a local restaurant where we met o. She seemed very familiar and I was sure we knew her from somewhere but couldn’t remember.
After brunch, we were getting our kayaks set up when she exclaimed, “I know where I’ve seen you!”
“Have you been to Waterloo, Iowa recently?” she asked.
“Why, yes we have, for my sister’s wedding”, I replied.
“I knew it! We stayed at the same motel that weekend. We were there for a wedding too.”
I love freaky coincidences like that.
We finally got our kayaks packed with essentials for the day and headed out for our ten-mile trip downstream. We set off by ferrying across the river toward the Illinois side so that we would keep out of the barge traffic lane. This also gave us the opportunity to explore one of the sloughs that circles around one of the smaller islands. These areas are so awesome to paddle. Since we are virtually silent, the chance to see the native wildlife up close is incredible. Kayaking also requires such little water to move through, that we literally get to go where no other watercraft can.
After paddling a while, we all decided to take a swimming break at one of the sandbars on the islands. I pulled up to shore, got out and stretched. It always feels good to stretch the legs. I pulled off my skirt and went back into the water. Everyone was having fun splashing about, and my husband was still in his kayak paddling amongst us. I got on the underside of the bow of his boat with my arms and legs behind me like I was his mast head.
He said, “Aren’t they usually nude?” I laughed and swam off like a mermaid teasing a sailor.
We resumed our trip for several more miles before taking a second break. It had been harder paddling with the waves coming at us and crashing over the bows of our boats as we headed downstream. The sandbar was very shallow with lots of large dead trees and rocks. I decided to break out the apples and granola bars for snacks. After a few minutes of hanging out, we were on our way once again.
The last few miles were weren’t as tough as the previous few, but as we came to our pull out point, the current in that part of the river was rough and it took every ounce of energy I had to ferry back across to shore.
It was nice to get back out onto the river after all of the flooding, and to spend the day with friends that we won’t get to see for another two years until they come back again for another adventure with Rockabilly Girl and her thankless sidekick, Rockabilly Boy.
