Roadside (2)

It was the sound of a car like the rush of a faucet that brought her back to the road. Headlights arched off the eastbound exit. She plucked the coils in her hair, quickly flattening from the humidity of the fields. Three steps to the edge of the road. She pulled her petticoat straight and brushed along the skirt seams. She pressed the corners of her eyelashes. Perfect. The back line of her stockings bisected each leg from thigh to knee to calf, until disappearing inside her gold peeptoe heels.… Continue

Roadside

Cecilia Delgado stood in the roadside gravel of bypass Highway 85, and waited for the next set of headlights to arrive. Underneath a borderline streetlamp she could see every part of her life. The exit to Gila Bend was just to her right, where the dark frontage road curved toward the highway. On her left, a two mile string of plastic fast food icons and gas station lights led to the entrance. The display outside the Gila Bend Credit Union turned to 11:08. (II:CE with the bulbs that still… Continue

The Space Age (3)

He stood carved of clay in the porcelain and chrome room. His first true shower in a month. Not splashed from a creek, rinsed by a hose, or wiped by handi-wipes. The metal tongue crackled the showerhead to life. Flesh was stained with a blend of dirt, oil, sawdust, and rusted metal cake of the past thousand miles. Blood was oil seeping. His knuckles and fingertips were whorls of knotted wood. Fine hairs sprouted from the fleshy top of his thumb and the callused outer edge of his hand. Only the… Continue

The Space Age (2)

A shaft of light from nowhere, and his eyes couldn’t adjust, blinded by chrome and white. He shadowed the glare with his hand. A building pounded out of fifties chrome, brighter than neon in ten o’clock sun.

And from this sign rose a paved savior, an emigrants paradise, filled with food and fuel, souvenirs and beef jerky. Hand painted sandwich boards sold rocks and international calling cards. Levi’s gait changed. There was purpose in it. Legs, still terribly exhausted, lifted with purpose. Pima Street. The most valuable mercantile of the town aligned in this seam. The necessities of locals and… Continue

Train Hopping (3)

Five cars ahead the freightcar snapped with the inertia of all the cars before it. If he didn’t jump, the train would throw him from the edge. Even if he could hold on the train would deliver him far from where he was meant to stop. And if he climbed back inside the car he’d have to contend with a load of steel pipe that was ready to waffle him under such a quick pull. He threw the backpack over the edge sidearm. “swing out and let go.” He straddled the gondola wall and scrambled to grip where… Continue

Train Hopping (2)

Levi knealt down to pick up his pack. Inside the gondola he could hear it coming. A dampened pounding something like a soft hide drum, perfect rhythm. The train was still going hot, slow enough to make its crossings, but pushing. He reached up for the lip and leaned forward with his chest against the gondola sidewall. He balanced on his toes against the pipe. Cars snapped at their couplers, making the steel bodies shiver one to the next. They swayed from the jolt. No depot ahead, no town left.… Continue

Train Hopping

Levi looked upward to his only view, unfeathered by clouds, just empty space between himself and the heavens. Everything in a different state of disappearing, blanched by exposure, disassembled into the seasoned chalkdust.

Death angels in the diesel engines, black smoke ghosts revealed the slow burn of destruction without flame, drying, crumbling, fading layer by layer until it no longer existed. The only sign of life was a dust devil spinning through an uninhabited valley, it held… Continue
