I suppose this is where I introduce myself. I am known as Bijou Merlot. I am a performance artist, and more specifically, a burlesque performer, as well as digital and analog media artist based in Kansas City Missouri.
I have had a vast interest in all things pin-up, burlesque, vaudevillian for quite some time now. I'd guess its been ever since middle school, where I was first exposed to the wonderful, sexy world of "the pin-up girl". I suppose much of it has come from inspirational cultural icons we all know and love such as my first encounters with Betty Paige, Gil Elvgren's artwork, and of course, more modern icons such as Dita Von Teese.
My love began to blossom more and more throughout adolescence, as I dug deeper into the motivation behind these movements in human, and even moreover, feminine sexuality. During my first year at the Kansas City Art Institute in 2008, I had the pleasure of being taught by one of the finest art history and woman's studies' scholars in the country, Maria Buszek. As I was to soon discover, she is also the author of one of the most influential books I have read thus far regarding Pin-Up and it's relationship to women's issues and femininity, entitled, "Pin-Up Grrrls".
2008 was a pivotal year for me as an artist, because this was also the first year in which I initially "got my hands dirty", so to speak, in the world of Burlesque and Pin-Up that exists right here in my hometown of Kansas City. I began as a photographer for the events held locally, seeing as a dear friend of mine, Dolly De Maul, was fresh on the scene as well. She began performing Burlesque with a troupe in KC known as Two Gun Tease, and I, of course, tagged along as a photographer.
Beginning as the photographic eye, witnessing one of these visually stunning events for the first times in person was absolutely and incredibly awe-striking. I fell in love instantly, and shortly thereafter, I was invited to guest spot, hence my alter-ego now known as Bijou Merlot was born. After participating in a few shows, I became a permanent member. Everything else is, as they say, history.
Currently, I am an independent performer, having appeared in shows alongside many other talented artists such as Lucky DeLuxe, Annie Cherry and Artemis Vulgaris, Eartha Delights, Daisy Bucket and many other countless and fantastic performers.
Though I'm busy expanding my blossoming career as a burlesque performer, I also model and go-go dance from time to time. I've appeared in fashion shows for local designers such as Lea Collins of Monkeywrench, Faith Evangeline of Evil Pawn Jewelry, and Halliday of Take A Halliday clothing, and I've formed a side project with my partner in crime, Dolly De Maul, go-going for a local punk-rockabilly band known as Them Damned Young Livers, and the two of us as The Bad Habits.
