Hello, I joined this site this morning and recently I've fallen in love to the whole pin up/rockabilly look. I am completely new to this whole thing and was wondering if maybe someone could help me. I know some of the basics to a pin up/rockabilly wardrobe but, I was wondering what do you wear that's more casual? Especially for tops, because I know rolled up capri's and skinny's an high wasted shorts works but I'm not entirely sure what to add to my wardrobe shirt-wise other than cardigans. Then I had another question for those who do the pin up pictures, I've never modeled in pin up clothing before, and neither do I know anyone who actually can do those types of pictures.. Any suggestions or advice on how to get started? Or maybe a link to a guide to getting started maybe?

Welcome to PL. You have quite a few questions here, and they can all be answered by spending some time looking through the forum.

There are threads in the fashion and shopping section about the basic wardrobe for 40's, 50's and rockabilly; what to wear when it's cold, casual looks and so many other things.

As for getting started in modeling, again, soooooooo many threads here about how to start. Just look in the modeling section and you'll find tons of advice. You can also check the casting section to find photo shoots in your area.

For another type of guide on getting into this scene, check out my website. The PinUp 101 section is all about getting started! www.roxy-tart.com

Good luck, and if you have questions that you can't find answers to in the forum, please feel free to ask!

Thank you so much, this has been a big help for me to get started! I will definitely look at your website.

Sure. I do wardrobe styling and clothing sales. Feel free to connect :)

For sure think about what side of the alt genere you love most. Study period pieces if into pinup and get the background. Once that makes sense- it all comes into play

My suggestion is look around and find some car shows in you're area, go dressed in whatever genre you choose. There are generally photographers there and they will find you, I promise. You might spend some time flipping through the pics here and studying poses that you feel will flatter you. There's also a section here on the forum of photographers listed by areas, but I'm not sure where the link is at this moment. I think you'll do great, you have "the" look.

Hallo Mira, welcom to PinupLifestyle. I try a little bit to help you. But I am not a specialist for it. I am also not living this lifestyle (it is a shame), it is only a hobby for me.

First of all with your clothings, I recommend you all the shops advertising here on PL. Also to look a bit through all the pictures. Than you can decide, what is your way. Slim skirts or perhaps jeans or tops, like you will find on the pictures. It does not mean your style will be expensive, it depents on what you want.

One of the most important part is the how you do your make up. It must be also a little bit old fashioned. But also have a look on the pictures, it will give you a lot of ideas.

Regarding a photo session: it depents where you are living and if there is a quite good photographer near by. It makes no sence to visit somebody who will be unexperienced in this kind of job. Normally such a photo shooting is expensive. So it is mandatory to have a photographer who knows what he is doing. You need to know about clothing, what make up, a nice location or a studio. I think some of the members here can help you.

At the end I can paint a picture of your favorite photo, if you like. So it will take some time, but you will find the right way to do so. Good luck for your way with your PL.

Really? I've only been to maybe two car shows but my family didn't usually stay long.  I never knew there were photographers there that will be willing to take pictures for me? That'd be awesome because I don't really know how to get started on that. I still have yet to find the perfect dress for this spring. lol. But I really appreciate that bit of advice! Thank you!

Thank you for your advice, I will definitely  remember when I am on the look out for a photographer. And I am still trying to find my way, so far I like basically ALOT of the pin up looks. Like, it's rare for me to find some of the pin up looks I actually don't like.

You do?? Maybe you could help me out a bit on wardrobe styling? I probably need some help in that department, I mean I understand generally what is pin up, (generally), and whatnot, but I think I like the more modern pin ups.

Yep, photographers do go to these shows for the cars and ambiance, Just hang around for a few hours and some will show up. If I saw you and you were dressed in period attire, I wouldn't be afraid to approach and ask if you would pose in front of some cars for me. Most will even send copies of the photos to you for you're portfolio. Not all of us are all about copyright crap. Most car owners are thrilled when their cars are included in a nice series of shots. I know this for a fact, I have shot a few car shows and have seen their faces when you start snapping their cars. One thing you can do, is post a notice on craigslist stating you'll be at such and such car show and would love to have some shots taken. Get their phone number and meet them there. It's pretty safe that way. Myself, I have an account at Zenfolio and I would share any pics through there, so you could select which ones you want free and download them. That way everyone feels comfortable and it's safe for you. A paramount point for me.

Wow, that's pretty awesome. I didn't realize it's that easy. I am so excited to go to my first car show now :D. I'm planning for one when it gets warmer and i'll take a friend with me and see if it works. The only thing I'm concerned with however, is I live in a small town area and the car shows nearby are small town car shows, would photographers like that still show up there? Or should I try bigger places? And does this go for any car show do you think? I'm only asking because I've never been to a car show, so I'm unfamiliar on how they actually work lol!

I wouldn't bother with the huge corporate shows. I would stick more to those that have 100+ cars. They seem more personal than the mega shows. Do a search for car shows in you're area. The clubs here in Oklahoma have a site they list them on. Something like this. http://slauener.tripod.com/id7.html

I'm not sure what state or area you're in, I know a great photographer friend up in Hudson Vally NY, does total free shoots and he's really good, I mean really good. Here in the closest little town to me, they have a meet up every Thursday afternoon at the Braums Ice Cream place and about once a month at a Sonic DriveIn in Tulsa. Probably 30-40 cars. Great place to network with them and get to know people in that circle. Pretty much you want to market yourself in this personae. I would say do the Craigslist list thing and bring a friend and start showing up ready to shoot! There are photographers out there looking to shoot free, to help build their ports also. Model Mayhem is another great place to network, but it's more commercial and some of the models and photographers can be rather, well, rather eccentric. Don't get discouraged if things start slowly. Just make sure to approach this safely.
