Ahhh yes, the nail hits the head, "TASTE" is subjective. This is the wonderful thing about a community, we can have a conversation and end it simply based on the fact that we agree to disagree. As an artist, you cannot please everyone, you're only an artist when you learn to accept that fact. On the flip side you're not required to be pleased with what you saw/heard because not Etta James, Flo-Rida, or the Eastern European group could please everyone either.
Thanks for the insight and thoughts!
those guys over in eastern europe are just now getting mtv from the 80s. sounds like ska music.
I'm an artist. here's my view. everything's been done before. all musical combinations that are pleasant to hear, all colors, all patterns all has been done before. if you study art history, you'll see the deco period actually began in ancient egypt and not in the 30s. the only thing an artist can do anymore is a timely revival of classic elements combined in a tasteful and appropriate manor. I do not consider hip hop as a classic element and it's therefore, ill-applied toward classic culture.
I am however curious about your stance on the meshing of past and current cultures. This particular video above provided audio inspired inspired by the yesteryears. Check out this video, do you have the same sentiment towards it considering it's A: not hip hop B: not real vintage C: a recreation of retro visuals ?

madmark, you make a good point, there is no hip hop in retro pinup culture. HOWEVER, there IS retro pinup culture in Hip Hop and just about any musical genre able to be considered pop culture. Beyonce did the pinup thing, katy perry, christina aguilera, and many many more.
This network is not here to live in the past, but rather to celebrate retro pinup culture both from the past AND the future. This is why the tagline is "From Lace to Latex - We are the new vintage."
hip hop permeates popular culture today. isn't that enough? does it have to be retroactively inserted into my fondest memories as well? I went to car shows in the sixties. When Big Daddy's customs were making there first round and people were wearing surfer crosses and airbrushed shirt. I can't even watch a gangster movie or a western without Hollywood slipping some hip hop in on it. it's like revising history. just like there's no crying in baseball, there is no hip hop in retro pinup culture.
The world is "Cleaner" and "Safer" without hip-hop? Seems that the elimination of hip hop is perhaps the key to world peace in your eyes, or is it the people behind it, because surely the music wouldnt make an unsafe world right?
can't buy it. retro/hotrod/pinup thing reminds me of a cleaner, safer, better time. a time when there was no hip hop.
@Madmark, it's the old inspiring the new. That vocal is off a classic Etta James track. Amazing that a track essentially built around that vocal can top the charts today. Consider it a celebration of the past.
