Throw away those astrology books that typecast Sagittarius as uncontrollable. Undisciplined. Commitment-phobic. Can’t finish what you start. This year, you’ve gotten as far away from your wild-child roots as humanly possible—and you know what? It’s not so bad.
Thank expansive Jupiter and disciplinarian Saturn for your transformation. Jupiter (your ruling planet) spent 2008 in your second house of money, work and daily environment. You’ve been more of a plodding bull, working, working harder, and working some more. Although you may have changed jobs more than once this year, it’s been less about pocketing quick sums of cash, and more about prioritizing. The need to align whom you are and what you do has gotten stronger than ever. The summer was a little rocky financially—Jupiter was retrograde—but when you review your 2008 finances, we’re confident you’ll be pleased.
Any ill-fitting jobs were stripped away this year, possibly at your own behest. That’s because Saturn has been traveling through your tenth house of career and leadership since September 2007. Saturn delivers challenging situations that force us to grow. You may have risen to a position of prominence that felt a little uncomfortable, causing you to stretch as a manager, department head or company owner. Or, like one Sagittarius friend, if the yoke of a high-ranking position became too tight, you may have cast it off in search of something truer to your soul. (Sidenote: he’s returned to his company as an independent contractor, making his own flexible two-day schedule and traveling in-between. That’s a Saturn victory—you call the shots!)
Clashes with authority figures rattled many Sagittarian’s cages, but looking back, you can now see it’s for the better. Either this person wasn’t qualified to lead you, or there was something important for you to learn. Well, you’ve got plenty of time to evolve now, Sag. On November 27th, transformational Pluto ended a 13-year run in Sagittarius, deeply transforming who you are as a human being. Pluto will spend the next 15 years in Capricorn, ruler of your second house, permanently altering your work and lifestyle. Whatever your “soul purpose” is, laserbeam Pluto will help you hone into it. Since Pluto moves into a new zodiac sign every 13-15 years, not everyone will experience its transformational powers in this part of their chart during their lifetime. It couldn’t happen to a better sign than yours!
There’s one caveat: Pluto is more like a deep volcano than a gentle wake-up call. The cycle may begin with something familiar being stripped away from you. It could be a job, a place you live, some material possession or “marker” that has been your internal home base. (Several Sagittarians we know are moving to completely different cities and countries.) You can expect to feel disoriented as this cycle begins. Our advice: don’t resist it! Pluto sweeps in and takes away all that no longer serves us, leaving behind what’s true and right. Be willing to let go, and know that an amazing evolution awaits!
The more you practice living in the moment—intensely soaking up the “now”—the better life will be. You’re the zodiac’s hunter, but it’s time to put your bow-and-arrow in rest position. There’s so much that you miss when you worry about the future. Steep yourself in the present moment, and you’ll soon feel divine love and joy radiating from the most ordinary situations. A great book on this is Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. He cites examples of historical figures, painters, philosophers, and everyday people who have achieved “flow”—a psychological state of happiness and satisfaction derived from unremarkable daily activities. Find that buzz that comes from deep serenity, Sag.
On a lighter note, December is just divine—a well-deserved month of fun and excitement. With the Sun and energetic Mars in Sagittarius, you’re one hot commodity! Although November made you a bit of a homebody, pack up those sweatpants and put on your boldest holiday-wear. It’s time to come out and play! The connections you make now will be important players in 2009. Best of all, you’re most likely to meet these people in a fun, social setting where you can totally be yourself. That’s the best way for you to meet people, Sag—when you’re being authentically you.
Love looks fabulous for you, too. On December 9, romantic Venus enters Aquarius, your social third house. Holiday parties and local hangouts are a great way to attract love or celebrate the relationship you have. The third house rules communication, so your witty banter and clever Sag jokes will win admirers. Laughter is the key to love in December. Romance doesn’t have to be hard work—especially now. With sexy, energetic Mars in Sagittarius until the 28th, you could even have a little fun under the mistletoe!
A peak relationship moment occurs December 12. That day, a Gemini full moon illuminates your committed partnership house. An important conversation with a partner—either business or romantic—could take place around this day. If you want to end a commitment, this is also a good day to do so. You could also accept a proposal, sign a contract, or take a relationship to the next level. With chatty Gemini here, we see a bit of talk or negotiation being involved. An honest, no-holds-barred conversation can help you create a more mutual or harmonious vibe.
Have these conversations now, because after the 21st, you may have some work to do over the holidays. Even if your job lets you off, you may want to use the downtime to turbo-clean your home, organize your receipts for early tax filing, review your budget, clean out your closet, or handle other mundane yet grounding tasks. There hasn’t been much time for this in 2008, and it will feel good to reconnect with all your possessions, even if you’re packing some up for storage.
If you have any desires about money, work and material property, write them down on December 27, at the Capricorn new moon. You’re not shallow for wanting nice things, a job you love, or prosperity. If anyone would know how to be generous with her bounty, it’s you. Instead of resolutions, consider writing a fictional “year in review” looking back from the end of 2009—as though you’ve already manifested everything. (E.g., here I am on my birthday at my favorite boutique hotel, more deeply in love than I’ve ever been.)
It’s a wonderful exercise that can ground you in a feeling of accomplishment. Use that feeling as your engine in 2009. Keep this script handy throughout next year, even reading it daily or weekly, and you’ll be amazed at what you manifest. Happy New Year!
