The Atlanta based production company Syrens of the South was started by two ladies with a common vision. Katherine Lashe and Talloolah Love met while performing burlesque in 2004 and were so often mistaken for each other they decided to start a sister act. In 2007, they toured with their duet all over the USA. In the span of three months, they traveled to and performed in Boston, Hollywood, Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville and at The Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.
On August 18, 2007, The Syrens of the South went from a sister act to a Production Company with their first full show simply entitled Syrens of the South Speakeasy Night at The Highland Inn Ball Room Lounge. Having been featured in Creative Loafing's See & Do section, it was a sold out show which proved to be the first of many for this new endevour. In 2008 the Syrens began offering their ABCs & 123s of Burlesque Class Series which includes teachers from many of the different performance groups around Atlanta including Creative Loafing's Best Burlesque Performer 2008, The Lady Miss Vagina Jenkins. The first student showcase was in August, one year after the Syrens first full show. This year also became one of heavy touring, including being the opening act for the Southeastern leg of Unknown Hinson's tour and multiple science fiction and fantasy conventions. The heavy touring and travelling is a trend that has continued today.
In July of 2009, the Syrens of the South found a home at Little Tree Studios. With a studio space for rehearsals and classes, as well as a full service theater, they were pleased to celebrate their two year anniversary in their new home with special guests Trixie Little and Evil Hate Monkey. In September 2009, the two year old company was named First Runner-up for Creative Loafing Atlanta's Best Burlesque Troupe, the same day they appeared on the Travel Channel.
January 2010 began the launch of the Syrens semi-regular steampunk.Victoriana event called The Mechanical Masquerade. The first event had over 200 people with vendors, performers and much merriment. The costumes were amazing and over the top that they drew the attention of many local news agencies as well as the Hellzapoppin touring show, who then invited the Syrens to perform with them. With the resounding success of the first Mechanical Masquerade and Burlesque Shows the Syrens of the South has moved out of Little Tree Studios to bigger venues around Atlanta! With new classes and new shows and events being added all the time, we're sure that the Syrens of the South has a bright future a head of it as one of the leaders in Southern burlesque.
