First off, I am a PROUD resident of the most amazing and unique city in the world..NEW ORLEANS!! Every where you go there is "character" and characters from every facet of the imagination. This city is also an Artists dream city to live in, due to amazing creative environment we have here. You can not help but be swept up in it. There is far more to New Orleans than beads, Bourbon St., and Mardi Gras..and I can not think of any other city I would rather live in. I am not from here originally, but this is my spiritual and creative home, and it feels like it always has been.
I have always had a fascination with photography. Ever since I was very young, i would spend hours looking through National Geographic Magazines and Time Life Magazines, looking at the beautiful, hypnotic, breathtaking, and sometimes tragic photos that played out in the covers. It's is cliche to say, but pictures speak a thousand words, and often to me, they speak a million more. As I got older, my friends and I would run around Los Angeles and Hollywood trying to find unique scenes in which to aim our lenses at. Strange architecture, Graffiti art, and Hollywood street characters were all our subjects...as well as surfers and sunsets along the coast.
I have always loved the arts. I draw and write as well. I sit spellbound when going to the theater and seeing live actors and actresses perform on stage. A current addiction of mine is The New Orleans Bingo show, performed by some amazing friends of mine. They are a Cabaret/ Rock/ Vaudevillian performance group, which also happens to play BINGO during their performance...truly New Orleans unique! I also have a love affair with most things vintage...I collect vintage clothing and Tiki items..I listen to mostly vintage style music such as Big Band, Jazz, Rockabilly...wish I owned a Classic Car..and I am inspired by artists such as Vargas, Elvgren and Petty. As I became more involved with the vintage lifestyle, my art became more and more inspired by it as well. I saw other amazing photographers capturing once again the beauty of women from the 30' through the 50's. I marveled at the works of Shannon Brooks, Rick Miller, Roy Varga, and how they captured the beauty of TRUE women, with a vintage flare. Women with curves and attitude..not dow eyed stick figures that many popular magazines try to force upon us today!
After Katrina, I decided I was going to work harder on my art, as the storm had taught me that life was much to short, and yet precious, not to try and live it to its fullest and be happy with what you are doing everyday you are blessed to wake up. My good friend, and co-worker, Joannie, spoke to me about putting together a calendar that captured the beauty of New Orleans and the women who live here, by creating a vintage, pin-up feel to it. Once again I was inspired to create, and her guidance and drive..not to mention the use of her camera..propelled me work further.
Almost 2 and a half years after the storm, I have created Black Sails Photography. I chose the name, due in part to my good friend and brother, Scott, from a tattoo piece he did. The name, inspired by the rebellious, unyielding, driven nature of the lore of Pirates, is what drives my photography. Though the focus tends to be mostly on the art of Vintage Style Pin-up, I also shoot for Bands, Performances, Promotional/Head Shots, and yes, Weddings...and anything else that can strengthen and further my love for the Art of Photography. I also believe that ART can lend to ones voice for change, and I use my art to speak out on social and political issues I feel strongly about.
So, yeah, I guess you could say that is a little about who I am and what this profile is all about. If you are interested or have questions regarding any photos or work, please ask me. I look forward to hearing from you.
May your seas always be calm, and the wind in your sails!!
