My Pinup Lifestyle, how it all began…

My name is Giovanna and like the rest of the folks around here, I live a Pinup Lifestyle in a very modern world and here’s how it all began…

I come from a large Sicilian family, so as one could imagine, I’ve been surrounded by beautiful women and handsome men, all of whom take great pride in their looks, and just about everything else. HaHa! While growing up I would spend most weekends at the home of other family members, sometimes my Nana’s home, maybe Godmother’s home, or one of my auntie’s. Any ways, like most kids you’d see my cousin running around playing, fighting, and watching TV; but not me. Nope, you’d find me somewhere by myself in a cozy corner looking through family photo albums. I honestly couldn’t say how many times I heard “Is she looking at those photographs again?” “Why is she always looking at those picture books?” I was obsessed! Album upon album of the most beautiful women I had ever seen; photos taken from the early 1900’s all the way to current date, but it was the pictures taken during the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s that had me in bliss. However, it wasn’t just the beautiful women in the pictures, it was everything in the pictures; the houses in the background, the cars on the street, the dishes on the table, the baby in the stroller, the people on the boardwalk, the clothing (THE HATS!), it was everything. While looking at the photos I remember wishing that I could just step inside and be the woman in the photo; the woman pushing the baby in the stroller, or the woman wearing the lace wedding gown standing next to her handsome groom with the big stogie in his hand.

All of the women in my family were and are very beautiful and inspirational; I’d have to say that the most beautiful and inspiring woman in my life is my Mama (“Ma”). Ma was a burlesque dancer for many- many years; dancing alongside of some of the most famous women during her time (Blaze Starr, Tempest Storm, and Lili St. Cyr) just to name a few. I would need Ma’s scrap book to be able to name all of ladies Ma danced with. I think burlesque dancers are probably the most attractive women I’ve seen and I honestly believe that they’ll remain young forever, Mama is living proof. “So to all of you gorgeous burlesque dancers out there, I applaud you and I think you’re all amazing women!”

To this day I clearly remember the chain of events that finally caused me to make up my mind and think “I’m going to be just like that” (not knowing that “that” was referred to as pinup). My Godfather had just passed away, so Ma told me that my Godmother (another family beauty) was going to pick me up, so I could stay with her for a few days. I was super excited because going to Godmother’s house was like going to a Coka~Cola - Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. Godmother picked me up in her 1941 Plymouth Pickup (my favorite vehicle) and I gotta tell you, this truck was a beaut! We drove to Godmother’s house in San Francisco and as we entered her house I noticed that she had hung old photos of her and my Godfather when he was in the Navy during WWII; however, there was one photo that caught my eye, it was a photo of one of the most stunning women I had ever seen. The photo was my Godmother during the 40’s and I swear she looked like she just walked out of a Hollywood movie. That was it, that was the final deciding facture of why and who I am today.

So, I would have to say that my pinup lifestyle stems from old family photos and all of the beautiful women in my life.

On a final note, I'm very happy as I was able to get copies of the photos that inspired me most while growing up; well with the exception of one photo that is, that being the stunning photo of my Godmother.

My first apartment in Boston was at 27 1/2 Charter Street in the North End. The only english my landlord, Mr. Bonfiglio, knew was "Pay the rent." and "No doggie." Still a cool place, the North End. We have the Stanley Cup now, you may have heard - everything is coming up Boston these days. Thanks for the greetings, Giovanna!
