"We Are The New Vintage"

PinUp Mama, you asked very clearly, "where does a pin up girl get paid work?". In asking that, it is assumed that you are asking how one gets paid. The people who answered were giving you an honest look at what it takes to get paid, just like you asked for. Also, as far as nudes not being "pin up", while they may not be classic, many pin up models do then to GET PAID. Again, that is what you were asking. There is no need to get upset or be insulted.
Hellz Kittehn, no one here is being a "Debbie Downer". The people who were nice enough to take the time to write out well thought out reply's are experienced in this scene. They were giving honest answers to her question. I think that it is wonderful that you do this as part of "finding your bliss". Most, if not all of us do this because we love the art and the scene. However that is not what she was asking. She was not asking why other girls do this, she was asking the simple question of "how do girls get paid" and it was answered honestly.
Let's please keep this thread on topic from now on.
Thank you.
Madam Roxy
Roxy-
I understand what you are saying the title of my post said to be paid-I didnt word it correctly hence why I clarified myself by the second post. I meant where do their pictures go, blah blah blah All the answers were amazing and I appreciated all of them but next time I will make sure to make my title post more clear.
With that being said, I am also entitled to my own opinions and I do have feelings so I should be able to express myself without being told how to express myself. As for the nudity not being pinup-I did not say that-I said classic pin up work from the 1930-1950's did not have nudity-not in the mainstream and Bettie Paige was not mainstream. I also said I would never judge anyone in doing it and would support them fully but that its not my thing. My grandmother who was a young woman in the 1940's taught me that a woman can be sexy and show sex appeal without showing too much. And I love what she taught me-its stay true to that particular time. But I am fully aware we are in the year 2011 and nudity pays.
On that note I will be more aware of my titles on the discussion board.
Thank you-PinupMama :)

PinupMama,
To go a little further into your question, most of the pictures end up stored on a hard drive and deleted after some time. After modeling for an hour or two, if you get five good pictures out of it, most people are pretty happy with that. After that, the pictures might just stay in a photographer's port for possible future use or just to show. Most will treat your pictures with respect, but some don't.
By treating them with respect, I mean you won't find your face and body on adult sites, or just your face on some... body on a site you would never choose to go on.
Some might be able to sell your picture to someone who will use it for... something.
We were in a bar the other night that has a huge picture of a young lady painted on a mural. Someone asked about her-- only to find that her face was a stock photo. The image was purchased for about $150 or $200. The model may, or may not have seen any money from that shoot.
I am very careful with what I do with the pictures that I use. If I took them and I am doing the post production on them, I have this, perhaps unreasonable, fear or respect to make sure that I do a good job of post production. I wouldn't ever want a model to see something I did and not love it. Others have different standards.
I am also very careful about where these pictures go. I would think it would be odd to be surfing along and be surprised to see your face on some website. If and when that happens to one of the models who wear my clothes, I want them to be happily surprised.
Personally, I am fairly careful about images of me, and I used to be more so. Some sites will have a face pic, but some will get a lovely picture of my feet. (I have great feet :p ) Others will get to see the beautiful mug shot of my cat. I have had enough of my writing stolen to know how easy it would be to take an image of my face and put it where I don't want it to be. When you allow someone to take pictures of you, this has to be constant in your mind.
I hope this answers some of those questions you and your husband had.
Thank you Trousseau! You answered my question. I often wondered where all the images go..I guess its kind of a risk you take depending on who you are working with...pretty wild! Thank you again-youre wonderful!!! xox
Let's be honest here.
NO ONE makes money being a "Pin-UP" model. Bernie Dexter make money selling clothes. Dita Von Teese makes her money being a celebrity. Remember she's represented by Marilyn's celebrity division and not the fashion division.
To say that you're pursuing a career in modeling in like saying you're pursing a career in professional sport. You've not only have to have the physical attributes, you have to work crazy hard and still only an infinitesimal number make it.
I have friend who were signed with Ford, Elite and IMG. Girls who've been featured in Gap and Abecrombie campaigns. Girls who are 5'10', size 2 and if you saw them on the street your jaw would drop.
And are they making money modeling? Nope. They gone on to other things like law school, MFA's and LCSW's.
There will be times you'll get paid, but probably nothing more than gas money and paying for dinner. So don't expect it to be anything more than a hobby.
Finally, you know who makes money on "Pin-UP" modeling? People who tell girls that they can make it if they shoot with them or let them rep them or take their class. Basically, people who prey on a girl's dreams.

Hah. I know your kind. You entice a woman with charm, tell her she is beautiful, that she will look great in pictures... only to get her to take off her shoes so you can take pictures of her nekkid feet.
Where are those photos?

Many of the models I've worked with have gotten paid gigs working with magazines and photographers like myself who use pinups in posters for major events. You've got to market yourself and get your name and photos out there. If someone needs you, this is the place to be. I'm sure there are other venues that you can earn a few bucks, but the competition is fierce. Pinups are easy and fun to create. If you have 'the look,' you will get paid gigs. Good luck, sweetie!
