Going to burlesque shows is my main form of entertainment. Having traveled a lot I notice how different the scene is in different cities. I really would love to hear about what types of great stuff is happening in other places. I can only scour youtube and other social networking sights sooo hard.
OK I'll start. I saw a show at Chow Bar in the west village, it was Calamity Chang's Dim Sum Burlesque. It has been running every Sunday. It was unique since they seat you an hour before the show and it was in the back of a decent restaurant. It went smooth enough to be a little bit like dinner theater. The highlights of the show were; Dame Cuchifrito doing a tribute to Peter Greenaway's Pillow Book with very eloborate sets costumes and a fan the blew off her robes, and Calamity Chang's meticulously choreographed fan dance which was made extra perfect by the fluffiness of her black ostrich fans. I just love when the feathers are thick and fluffy and you can not see a thing thru them it makes the movements against the air more interesting. So overall a nice change of pace for a more elegant setting and a A+++ for costuming.
Also, I recently saw "Crampus, songs Luxe taught us", at the slipper room. This was a one off theme show which is the norm here in NYC. I was surprised it didn't draw much of a crowd, as the idea of a Cramps themed burlesque show is very exciting to me. It featured some of the all time stars of burlesque. Tigger hosted, and had his family jewels out for most of the time. At one point he put on a Luxe wig and told us it was just his Liza wig restyled (I kinda love that). Another highlight was Jo Boobs. She had members of the audience put on lipstick and literally kiss her ass behind her fans so at the end she revealed a lipstick printed bottom to the audience. That Jo, so clever. At the end they chose to members of the audience to go thru a spanking machine. I just loved it. Because in my perfect world there would be more Cramps and more burlesque.
