I do realize that some girls want to model for monetary reasons. And for that, you probably do need to have a marketing plan, etc. I think the reason my approach is different is because I have a full time career that pays my bills. Once my wrinkles set in, I'll need it!
I probably have a different approach than many. So, take it for what it's worth :)
A dear friend harassed me for over a year before I decided to take my first professional photo. But when I did, let me tell you! I was in loooooove with the camera!
The reason I think my approach is different is because I don't model for the same reasons that others do.
I started with that first photoshoot, I've always been a girly girl, but now I can get all dressed up for photoshoots, and I just loooove it, yay!! And that's it. :D Compensation wasn't important, more MySpace friends wasn't important, attention from the boys wasn't important, having tons of fans wasn't important, you get my drift.
I did what I love, because I loved it. Once that happened, people noticed, I started getting compensated for modeling, got a ton of MySpace friends and fans, boys paid attention, and now you're reading my post, pretty cool right?!
I never asked artists to draw me, I waited for them to be inspired by images and ask me for the rights to use them as reference. I never asked to participate in events, I waited for the organizers to be interested in my look and invite me. I never asked popular photographers to photograph me, I just waited for them to one day take notice of my work and invite me to their studios.
I also didn't believe in spam. Adding mass amounts of MySpace friends to gain popularity or exposure wasn't my style. I'm not saying any of this is wrong, it's just not for me. Just like asking a boy out isn't my style, I wait to be asked.
Organic growth is more sustainable, in my opinion. Be good at what you do and maybe the right people will notice. Good work doesn't have to be placed in someone's lap, just do your best and great things will follow.
