Hi Ladies! I'm new here and I want to ask a question I had in my mind since I discovered pin up. I looked some discussions and I didn't find something explaining this, and If this isn't in the right place I'm sorry :(

My question is: Can a black girl be a pin up? A lot of people told me this cannot be possible because every pin up girl has white skin, and the make up they wear is special for that skin.

(And sorry for my bad english)

of course we can! the original pin up girls got their fame because they were built like girls with black skin...it just wasn't our time yet!
Even if pin up is a retro thing nowadays, it is filled with modern technique and fashion so why not modern thoughts too? You do what you feel like doing and the life will give you roses. :)

Okay so you think it has to do with being built like a black woman? No it had to do with being a woman stripped down in her panties and looking coy and cute for the boys over seas. Now Bettie Page put a spin on that one and made some waves but over all woman were being sexy and from the looks of it having some fun with it, all different shapes and sizes but you never really saw a gym body in those days so indeed it was a different time. Personally I think Pearl Baily was hot but that's my opinion.  I was being cheeky when I said yes you can because that is in reference to the Youtube video.

i think the term "darker person" was the wrong term....we're not all that dark...you know what?! i think that non black people should stop thinking so hard on how to be politically correct...if you're white you're white and if you're black you're black...i love being a brown girl. being black was something i stopped fighting about a long time ago, i think that black girls rock and being called "darker" no matter the race, is a tad ignorant, point blank...we're not stranger races anymore. we're neighbors and work assistants; we're best friends and in-laws. let's act like it!

This is a beautiful statement!

Yes it was hard to find loads of famous black 'pin-ups' but that doesn't mean you can't do the look anyway. My Nan was a hard working carribean immigrant with very dark skin and she ALWAYS rocked a pin-up style, just in her own way. the cool thing about being into the whole pin-up lifestyle is that you take the style of the silver screen and apply it to your own, everyday life.

I've been to a few 'vintage' hair and makeup classes that didn't cater for certain things that you just can't do with alot of black skin tones and hair types so I did some black/asian makeup tutorials online and mixed them in with the vintage classes and worked some things out. It's all do-able once you get into the stride of it!

I haven't read this whole thread but felt the heat over here in the mountains of Bolivia. Ladies cool it and keep it civil, educate don't hate. Of course!
It's about embracing the culture, the fashion - the lifestyle!
Skin colour is so irrelevant!
Of coarse black girls can do pinup. Aren't there many cameras in this world available to take pictures? Why not use some to take images of you! Look at my website http://thepinupnoire.com. Not only will you see my picture as an example, but when you contact me on Facebook, twitter, and tumblr.com I share pics of other models of African decent as well---go to contacts section to click on all my links :) Yes, models with dark skin are not shown often, but don't let that discourage you from taking pinup pics. The more pics to saturate the media, the more often it will be seen!

I have read all the replies and thank you for taking the time for answer my question and sharing all the links. I'm amazing with the quantity of black pin up girls! There are a lot! And of course they're stunning!!

I hope this video helps put it to rest =)

Over 150 vintage "colorful crayon" pin-ups from the 1950's =)
