The Fifties Diet
Think at the Hourglass figure of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot.

The fifties diet is not a starvation diet! Anything but that! In the fifties you didn’t need to be hungry to be thin! Moreover, the amount of calories that a woman ate in the fifties, is the same amount of calories these days. But why were women slimmer?

Nutritionist Annelies Verhelst gives the 5 most important reasons

1. Less fat
In the fifties we get 33% of our calories ingest trough fats. These days it gets to 40% and we eat too much saturated (= bad) fat. You find saturated fat in cookies, sweets, fat meat and whole milk products. You get unsaturated fat out of olive oil, nuts, line seeds, avocados and peanuts.

2. More complex carbohydrates
Women in the fifties picked such 55% of their calories out of complex carbohydrates.
These days it’s only 45%. You find complex carbohydrates in potatoes and whole wheat bread. Brown rice and wholemeal pasta had most of the Flemish families in the fifties not on the menu, but they also contain complex carbohydrates.

3. Less sugar
60 years ago we ate such 250 gram sugar weekly. Nowadays, our weekly sugar intake is doubled to less than 500 grams. The more sugar you eat, the more insulin your body produces and the less saturated you feel. Insulin sends the oversupply of sugar subsequently forward to the fat cells. There is the sugar converted in fat.

4. More “real” food
Of processed food and junk food was barely mentioned in the fifties.
Processed food and junk food contains various flavour enhancers, glucose syrup and preservatives. Comes such sugar in our metabolism, than they prevent the production of hormones that regulate our appetite and fat deposition.

5. Less alchohol.
Cocktails at the weekend, every evening aperitifs with red wine? Very Sex and the City, but in the fifties women barely drunk alcohol. And alcohol is – yes- a calorie bomb!

How does such a fifties diet looks like?
Breakfast: wholemeal bread, seasonal fruit, yoghurt. Fillings: cheese, jam, ham, salami, chocolate, rhubarb puree, or applesauce. Coffee and water.
Lunch: the same as breakfast + soup.
Dinner: every day the combination of potatoes, vegetables and meat or fish.
You can eat potatoes and vegetables together as a puree – or to say on his fifties: stoemp.
At least once a week people ate fish, and on Sunday they may fries.
In Between: fruit. Occasionally sinning with chocolate, gingerbread or brown spiced biscuit. On Sunday a pie or cake.
Alcohol: only in the weekends or at a party.

DELETE!
 Fast food
 Ready-made meals
 Cookies and sweets in between
 Soft drinks and light refreshments
 Cereals
 Sweetened yoghurts
 Foods with preservatives
 White pasta and rice
 Chips and other snacks

THE FACTS
No wonder diets, miracle food or sports hype.
In the fifties they ate ‘what the jar purchased’.
And yet women were slim without much difficulty.
Slimmer than the average woman today.

Women in the fifties Women anno 2010
Weight 61.5 kg (135.59 pounds) 64.5 kg (142.20 pounds)
= + 3 kg (6.6 pounds)
Waist circumference 68.5 cm (27 in.) 86.5 cm (34.1 in.)
= +18 cm (7.1 in.)!!!
Hip circumference 99 cm (39 in.) 102 cm (40.2 in.)
= +3 cm (1.2 in.)
Bra size 80B (36 C) 85C (38D)
= + 1 cup & 5cm (2in.)

Especially our waist circumference is much broader than fifty years ago. It’s more than eighteen centimetre! Goodbye feminine and sexy hourglass figure like Marilyn Monroe and welcome rectangular body...

Back to the fities? YES
because... “The fifties diet is delicious, healthy, cheep and the dishes are easy to prepare. After 2 weeks in his fifties food, I lost 1.5kg (3.31 pounds). And Important: I was not hungry. So definitely yes to gray sandwiches, soups, vegetables, potatoes, stoemp and everyday piece of meat or fish.”
Back to the fities? No!
Because… “Still sometimes I just need once in a while a sin. Finally, I have many more choices today in the supermarket and the restaurant then a typical fifties housewife. Occasionally, whole wheat pasta, couscous, sushi and fajitas in 2010 should also be.
