"So... you're a Stripper?"

   I've always been a lover of vintage glamour and style. I wore a vintage reproduction swing dress to my senior prom. I've been obsessed with Broadway, classic movies, and the sound of a well performed Standard all my life. I'm also a born performer... so turning to Burlesque and Cabaret was a natural choice for me. It is only just recently that I have fully embraced these art forms and made them into a part-time job along with modeling.

   I now have to face the task of explaining what I am doing to my family, friends, and a few acquaintances . There has been laughter, requests for pasties and other items I custom make, the "I could never do that's" and some clear and utter shock. One friend says that it's like I ran away to join the circus and can't wait to see me perform. If only everyone could be so accepting. I've already fielded the dreaded question that will accost every Burlesque Performer at some point:

   "So... you're a Stripper?"

   Yes I'm a stripper... I'm also a choreographer, costume designer, prop maker, make up artist, and hair stylist. I have complete creative control of my performances and I no longer have to deal with directors. I get to pick my own music. When I perform, it is 100% me, no one is telling me what to do or how to do it. 

   Being asked that question itself doesn't bother me, it's the tone of voice that gets to me. The close mindedness. People who ask this question don't care what Burlesque is. Most of them will never see a show, or do any semblance of research into my chosen craft. Instead, they judge.

   I'm sure that my new lifestyle is going to burn bridges, but I know that I will be better off without the judgmental, negative people who are revealing exactly who they are. Without them, I'll have more time to network, continue to improve my craft, add sparkle to my costumes... and dream that one day I'll be able to meet people like Dita Von Teese, Miss Dirty Martini, and Julie Atlas Muz and they'll know who I am.
