groundhogs...

I just purchased a home in November, and finally got to spend a day in the yard working on my first victory garden! My dog was assisting me, and halfway through digging up some overgrown weeds, she started going nutzo. Apparently, there are groundhogs living under my neighbors porch.
Before I get into a Caddy Shack style battle with these creatures, does anyone know any non violent way to get rid of the beasties? I had my heart set on growing my own vegetables, but I know they'll eat up anything the garden would produce. Anyone have any suggestions? I doubt my neighbors will do anything about it.

thanks for the advice! I wish groundhogs were afraid of yorkshire terriers. lol although my girl thinks she's a rough and tuff killer, she's only been able to catch mice, rats, and hamsters (dont ask ;) ).
